This is somewhat related to the thread "Fate of 200 Buri Ram Natives in Japan unknown".

I have always noted that a very high percentage of workers in the classic Tourist-Hubs (mostly females) seem to come from Bury Ram. Every 3rd or 4th lady, that is being asked "where you come from" is answering with "Buri Ram".

- Is the particular region of Buri Ram especially hard hit by economic circumstances, that will not allow young folks (again, mostly females), to find any gainful employment and therefore have to leave the region in search of "Greener Pastures" ? But what would make the "Buri Ram Region" harder hit than any other town in the Isaan ? I just wonder.

Cheers.

Yeah, I might wonder about this myself. Knowing the immediate region reasonably well, I might suggest that Buriram is no more or no less "harder hit" than her provincial neighbors. Would be an interesting little research project...

One reason is that Buriram is larger than most of the other Isaan provinces. Another is that the urban areas, including Buriram itself, are smaller than e.g. Surin, and therefore offer less non-agricultural work. A third reason (probably) is that much of the riceland is single-crop because of lack of water, and therefore family incomes are proportionately lower.

I live in a Buriram village where, unless they go to Bangkok or Pattaya to work, there is very little for the young people to do. The ones who stay behind are the real layabouts, not much good to anyone, or, in the case of the girls, they have to stay behind to look after older relatives..

Connections too, if there are family members who have successfully made their way in Bangkok or Pattaya, they will encourage other family members and friends to join them. As you say there are no shortage of relatives/associates to put you up for a few weeks while you try to find work, even to the extent if a vacancy arose then an offer would quickly be made to supply a good worker.

Simple reason is that Buriram girls are the most beautiful.:D

Nah. That would be Surin.B)

To each his own taste. The people in Surin and Buriram, at least a good proportion of them, are Thai/Khmers, and therefore the same racial stock... so both of you are simply prejudiced.

When a Thai says they are from Buriram they dont mean the city!!!! They mean the province and as someone pointed out in another post, Buriram is an extremely large province. My wife is from Nong Ki which far nearer to Korat than Buriram but she will always say Buriram when asked where she comes from.

In my opinion many of these regional women have seen local Thai women married to Farang men and want the same kind of life for themselves. My wife has had many serious requests to "find me a farang husband" giving her pictures etc. Some of these woman, for one reason or another, are not willing to go to the farang hubs to look for themselves. The ones that are brave enough simply leave the area to see for themselves. The families generally support these reconnaissance actions by the young single women of the family because they stand to benefit to a greater extent than they would by hitting the lottery if she does find a Farang husband. It is pretty hard to fault their logic. It is a way to escape concrete floors, plank walls and a tin roof, carrying water to the house from and bathing in the communal water hole and cooking on a ceramic cooker. One only needs to look around to see the reasons. Many of these women also say they are from Udon so it is a very widespread phenomenon.

The requests for wives to 'find me a farang man' are certainly not restricted to young single women. Many times I have seen older (by this I mean in their thirties) woman who have been deserted, ill treated by their Thai husbands usually left with children who the husband has no intention of ever supporting. They see that getting a farang is possibly the only way out of the predicament that they are in. In many cases these women make ideal partners, they are usually well treated, are given material possessions that they would never have dreamed of, and their offspring and family are looked after.

The phenomenon that has greatly rooted itself throughout Isaan is the advent of online dating, marriage, and social networking sites. It's catching on for years now, as less and less ladies find it necessary to run of to those Farang "hubs" - where now, they can just look for their dream guy online.....more often with some language help from a friend or relative. Deep in their hearts, these girls would probably opt for this game than running off to BKK, Phuket, Patters to whore themselves out {sort of speak}, as it's really not of their nature and generally looked down upon in the society.

Yes, Buriram has been very hard hit, by the re-cessation, lack of water, lack of industry, etc etc.

In Buriram city, there used to be 4 Farang bars on the '' Lake'', now there is only one.

In Phimai, the Saturday market, used to overflow from the street it was located. Now, you can walk 30 metres into the street, with no stalls.

There are very few Farangs anymore, very sad really.

So in theory Buriram must be one of the wealthiest provinces, as all the guys with women there take care of their families each month with 10k or 20k........times that by the number of guys with ladies from there and the monthly inflow must be in the billions of baht

I had heard that Buriram was becoming one of the wealthiest provinces. That is not borne out by this 2007 league table:-

I can't agree with this. I go to Buriram city once or twice a week and you are usually falling over Falangs in Big C etc. The misus has now re-named it "Falang City".

There are increasing numbers of Falangs in other towns and last Thursday I saw 8 in Nang Rong !

That's a scary chart.
