I think 6 months

It varies from bank to bank ( I was quoted 45 days). It is better to wire the money if you want it quick (4-5 days)

45 days it is for checks and good for the poor banks to earn something off your money.

I used to buy Baht-checks from HSBC IN Hong Kong issued by a local source and as such cashed immediately as local check. Not sure, if HSBC in UK can do it.

Otherwise, do transfer by wire.

No such thing as a poor bank

UK HSBC cannot issue THB cheques......you cannnot even get a foriegn currency account in Baht.

If you have a sterling current account you probably have a switch/Maestro/cirrus card. You can withdraw through most ATMS up to your limit.

This cheque is from an insurance company in the UK and the person who is trying to cash it is in Thailand, they have been told it would take 7 days to clear once they have opened an account in Thailand which they have done but not sure if this is true or not.

7 to 10 days should do it.

Certain American Express cards will guarantee cheques drawn on US and UK accounts allowing instant payment of funds. This is my preferred method to draw down from overseas.
