Coast guard searches for three immigrants missing in Greek sea

2011-03-22 22:32:20 GMT+7 (ICT)

ATHENS (BNO NEWS) -- Coast guard officials on Tuesday were looking for three immigrants who fell into the sea during a rescue operation off the Greek Ionian island of Paxoi, the Kathimerini newspaper reported.

The three men fell into the sea as they were being transferred from a sinking wooden boat onto a cargo ship that had come to the rescue late on Monday. Another 113 people were successfully transferred from the small vessel.

Three coast guard patrol boats and a helicopter were dispatched to the area after someone on board called the coast guard, saying their boat was beginning to take on water.

Authorities believe that the 30-meter long boat had set sail from Igoumenitsa in northwestern Greece and was heading to Italy.
