In Rimping, having a nose through the frozen meats and saw whole Black Chickens.

Asked a Thai friend what were they?.dyed or what, and he replied that they were natural Black.

I cant believe this for one moment, they were dark black ,black,black....so does anyone know about them???

I know the chineese salt eggs that turn black, but chicken??

It is natural. Chinese people in particular make a soup with them which is said to be very healthy (sort of upmarket Brand's Essence), and I've also had this soup in Phitsanulok and, if my memory is correct, in a Hmong house in Nan!

Yes they are natural.

They have them frozen at Makro.

Good but expensive.

Originates from China.

I should have googled before posting!. I now know about black chicken and have decided to give them a miss....although the pics of the living birds are cute.

Black chicken is a common guest in our household... Yes, definately

of chinese origin and considered a delicacy.

Rimping frozen ones are a bit pricey - we get our deliveries straight from

mountain village up north... 180b per kg (live ones, though our "delivery agent"

takes care of that problem, heh). In Chiang Mai available at least at Friday morning

market (night bazaar area), live ones 250b/kg and dead+cleaned 280b/kg.

Prefer those anytime over KFC stuff but the Oscar goes to self-grilled

standard whitey chicken with my special bbq sauce. Cheaper too.

Heard that it is common for the families raising these to slaughter

each and every chicken before cold season 'cause they'd die anyway...

and when weather warms up again - just buy baby chickens from those suppliers

that have figured out how to keep the black chicken warm during winter

Does anyone know of a restaurant that serves black chicken? I'd like to try it out before I invest in an entire bird from Rim Ping or Tops. I've seen them at both places and am interested, but I rarely buy an entire chicken for cooking at home.
