The title passes to Sirinya Jensen. Runner-up with a name more familiar to Thai ears.

Miss Thailand World 2005 Achara MacKay, also known as Angela, yesterday gave up her crown to continue her studies and her modelling career, only 10 days after she won the title.

The 21-year-old Thai-Australian, who has spent most of her life abroad and speaks only broken Thai, said she had not fully understood her contractual obligations as the kingdom's representative in the coming Miss World contest.

She was unaware that as Miss Thailand World she would have to remain in Thailand for a full year.

"I must work as a model under a contract with an agency in New York," she said.

BEC-Tero managing-director Brian Marcar said the title would pass to the runner-up, Sirinya Jensen.

Miss thailand gives up crown

Published on September 21, 2005

Miss Thailand World 2005 Angela McKay yesterday gave up the crown she had won only 10 days before. The beauty said she was quitting because she wanted to pursue her studies and modelling work in New York. While rumours flew that she had posed for raunchy photographs, her supporters dismissed them and defended her motives as purely personal.

“I’m under contract with a modelling agency in New York. I’m willing to step down. I didn’t understand the contract when I applied, because I can’t read Thai,” she said.

“It was just for fun, experience and an opportunity to learn more Thai, and I didn’t think I’d win”, said Angela. “During the 10 days I’ve been Miss Thailand World, I’ve felt the duties are too heavy. It’s a shame, but I can’t take it”.

However, to her critics, the reasons she gave “don’t make sense” and failed to warrant quitting the pageant, considered by many the opportunity of a lifetime.

As to Angela’s not understanding the contract, her critics wondered why her Thai mother, who appeared so happy when she won, did not translate the conditions for her.

Rumours of her departure started the night before an abrupt press conference was called for yesterday morning.

Angela and her parents, Robert and Anchana McKay, attended the event with pageant organiser BEC-Tero chairman Prasarn Maleenont and CEO Brian Marca.

Also present were Miss Thailand World second and first runners-up Kanokkarn Intim and Sirinda “Cindy” Jensen. They will assume Angela’s duties but not her title, while Cindy will take Angela’s place in the Miss World pageant.

“We have to respect the judges’ decision by keeping Angela as Miss Thailand World. Otherwise, the judges would be discredited, and who would want to judge for us next year?” said Prasarn.

Prasarn said he had no idea about the alleged photographs.

He was informed that Angela was not ready for her duties and was unable to adjust. “We’ll have to do some more background checks, but it’s all is up to the board,” said Prasarn.

“Because Angela decided to further her studies, we have to send Cindy to the Miss World pageant instead. There are no other reasons involved,” said Marca when asked if Angela had departed because of the alleged photographs.

Miss Thailand World 2004, Nikalaya Dullaya, said the decision was completely personal. She said it was really hard work and the sacrifice made over the course of a year was enormous. Nikalaya said she respected Angela’s decision to step down.

Angela completed high school in Australia. Since then, she has travelled and worked as a model in Europe and the US. She hopes to become a set designer for films and television shows.

When asked about the photos, Angela’s mother tearfully said someone had been spreading the malicious rumour.

She said Angela’s modelling work required her to pose for photographs, but they were artistically taken.

Angela’s modelling scout, “Mui”, said she had seen some of Angela’s work, and they included photographs of her in bikinis, but there was nothing like what the rumours claimed, she said.

Angela’s father did not respond to any questions.

A previous Miss Thailand World disruption occurred two years ago, when first runner-up Chatuporn Saengthong was disqualified when it was discovered she was married, which was against pageant regulations.

I heard a rumour that she quit because the thought of having make a visa run to Poipet every thirty-days to facilitate her one-year stay in Thailand had her in tears.  :o

edit-spelling

Serves the organisers right for choosing someone who can't even speak Thai. Imagine if Miss England could only speak (very) broken English, (hang on if she was a close relation of Wayne Rooney that could be the case).

The number 2 is half Danish, how's her Thai?

Guys, I had to tell her straight. It was either me, Tornado or the Miss Thailand title.

I just hope she remembers to get me some ciggies and beer from the 7-11 on the way home.

:o

Edit: Forgot about Torny her ex bf.

She has a deal in NY.

She got paid a million baht and a grotty flat here

Who would want to stay in this cowtown for that money, for a year. If you've got a gig in NY?

Basically, they told her to work for free for a year. This organisation is not doing her any favours.

Let her go back to her career.

Miss Thailand is just someone the 'suits' exploit.

She was best on the night. That counts.

I am well acquainted with the pageantry circuit. Almost never is the winner "chosen" on the night. They are chosen several days or weeks in advance, based on who introduced them; who presented them, that sort of thing. There is often a series of deals; e.g. I am this famous woman who has a lot of soap operas, I introduce this woman; we split the 1m 50 50 then she also commits (in advance) to doing certain ads and so on; while she might get 1m from the pageant, the real money is in ads and endorsements leading to a career - a good female model here of that status (if she got her Thai down in say the next 6 months) could earn perhaps 3-4 times that amount.....

And an agent would be along side her getting say 30% (standard modelling charge) or everything.

Let's see...well Sujira (Nui) she actually did win on the night; and the year after the Nahng Sao Thai who was supposed to win had to come in second; I already had job in the entertainment business lined up with the person who was supposed to come second; but when the first person stuffed up the question, she had to be demoted and the places reversed; it totally stuffed up the job in question; but they ended up finding someone else who turned out to be better anyway.

This was probably ALL explained to her, and either she is stupid, her parents are idiots, or the modelling contract came later or was never explained to the organisers - either way she will probably struggle to ever make as much there as she could here long term... no foreign modelling agency would enforce a contract like that since she would be worth more to them with a title, and also what sort of work is she going to be doing - ads and stuff? She can do big jobs on a direct booking and fly there and back...no sweat. So I just don't believe that there is any contract being enforced here.

the more likely alternative is that something has been uncovered which makes her unsuitable; based on the look kruengs who have won in the past the less connection they have to Thailand, the more likely they have some dirt - any bikini photos could potentially be a significant problem for a pagaent winner here; coming from Australia which is hardly a modelling centre of the world, it is quite possible there are some really rubbish photos of her somewhere.

Miss Thailand World is the best pagaent for the non-Thai/Semi-Thais...past winners include Cindy (no Thai blood but born in Thailand); Helen (1/2, cannot speak Thai properly); Lookgait (full thai raised in USA, couldn't speak Thai well when she won, is brilliant now though), Lada (Full Thai, raised in USA, couldn't speak Thai well when she won, bearable now) - not exactly the same as someone like Nui!!! I am pretty sure that there are done deals in advance for most of these...Avon and that sort of thing which the model gets a fair chunk of; all of these ladies mentioned made serious cash here on par with the upper rung of models in NY; I'd be very surprised if Angela could make more in USA than here if she was anything better than a complete idiot. Sadly, I suspect that there may be more to the story than this.

Better get the gossip from some Gay guys then.

I would think that would be a violation of a forum rule or two.

It's difficult to say. Please forward them to me and after I print them out in glossy format I will undertake a detailed study before making a decision which will of course have to be verified by the other mods and admins.

This is a kick back for Farang Fanzines mania created in Thailand. They are suppose to select a Miss Thailand who is born for both Thai parents. It is an insult to the country. Two years back in Kaosan road they have conducted a Miss Songran contest and all the selected girls were Western Farangs. There were some Thai, Japaneese girs contested, nobody is interested in looking at them. Every one learn to love their own country and own people first, other wise this kind of insult cannot be avoided.

Miss Thailand World, not Miss Thailand. Luk krungs are more than welcome to win Miss Thailand World. There's a pageant for everyone. Just like the new Black Beauty Thailand contest currently going on.

What an insult to Thailand, silly cow!

Yup .... on Yahoo News ....

Miss Thailand didn't expect to have to live there

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Australian beauty Angela MacKay has handed back her Miss Thailand crown just 10 days after winning it, saying her entirely unexpected triumph interfered with her modeling career.

"I really went into the competition because I just wanted to learn how to speak Thai and I wanted to have a Thai experience," said the 21-year-old from Perth with an Australian father and a Thai mother.

"I wanted to just learn about Thai culture. I honestly didn't expect to win at all. It was a very, very big surprise to me," she said before heading back to New York late on Tuesday to go back to modeling.

MacKay said she had been persuaded to enter by relatives in Thailand when she came for a visit and hadn't realized that the title required her to stay in the country for the coming year.

She returned the prize money of 1 million baht, a diamond crown worth 800,000 baht and a car.

Thailand will send second placed Sirinda Jensen to the Miss World contest in China in December. Jensen is half Thai and half Dutch.

It's a good thing they don't open up the Miss Jumbo Queen of Thailand pagaent to foreigners... a Thai would never win.

If all thais had true thai ancestry you would be worth listening to. Millions of thais are of mixed race and most only have thai names due to the name registration laws in 1909, when all the chinese changed their names. :o

Can't blame her a bit.

A young sexpot like that wants alot more than Thailand has to offer. Especially in selection of a boyfriend.

Smart broad.

Cannot say I agree; she would have earned more here almost definitely and models are notorious for sleeping around anyway - are you aware of how many foreign models are around - easy enough to hook into 1. Besides, we are talking about 1 year here; easy money and guaranteed work with no castings - a model's dream come true...which is why there must be more to it than this. NY is a tough city for mixed blood models who are 1/2 Asian; there is a reason why most of the mixed blood Asians are working in Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indo, Philipines - there is simply more money to be made here than there.

Regarding Miss Khao San; this is a "dregs of the beauty circuit" event, so I am hardly surprised that a foreigner won it; that is actually what it is supposed to be - a contest for foreigners!!!! It is Khao San after all.
