Car Registration

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know the procedure for old cars getting yearly registration.

I went to get my insurance renewed for 700 baht and they told me that I need to get it registered too. Something about checking to see it is not stolen.

A woman said she can get it done for me, taking it to the govt. place somewhere on the Udon Thani road. I am in Khon Kaen.

My first thought was that I could take it myself, but she said that she gets group discount.

Any experience advice appreciated. It is already out of date.

If anyone is interested, I got my registration sorted out. For cars more than 7 years old in Thailand, they must be checked yearly.

I didn't need to take my car which was good news. I paid a guy I know, who has a friend who works at the place, to take the registration no. He got this by sticking tape over the number and taking a pencil mark of it.

1500 baht for everything. 900 for the registration, 300 for not taking the car, 200 baht for the guy who took it and 150 for something else.

Was I ripped off? At least I can use my car today and not waste time while they check the whole car.

You just became part of the Thai system of corruption is the only thing that I can see. You could have done this all on your own and should have from where I stand on this issue. It might have been a bit of a hassle for you but then I think you might have least gotten someone to take the car in for you and then the car could have been checked out properly.

It's all nice and good to have friends that can assist you to get things done but at least try to do the right thing and get the car or whatever checked out. I'm from the US and we have yearly safety checks on ALL vehicles and think this should be cdone here, no matter the age of the car. Granted there are people that you can go to and get a bogus safety check but when there is an accident then you will be in alot of trouble if it is found out.

You asked:

"Was I ripped off? At least I can use my car today and not waste time while they check the whole car."

No, you weren't ripped off, you helped to rip off Thai society by contributing to the problem of corruption and other bad business practices. You were just lazy and didn't care. Why do you think you see so many accidents from the busses and other vehicles due to bad maintenence?

The car is going to the garage for a routine check later today, by someone i can trust.

Neeram,

The test costs 150 baht

I guess 900 baht was for registration (Tapien Lot),

200 baht for labour and 300 baht for tea money

I do not see any money for the compulsory insurance.

It is a 10k fine if you don't have it. The Land Transport should not issue the Tapien Lot without seeing the insurance but TIT.

Check that you have it.

They don't perform any safety checks what so ever, so Mr Rightous Kringle can relax. All they do is pop to hood and verify the engine and chassis numbers, if you're lucky they'll perform a basic immision check.

If you can't beat 'em join 'em

The place that I use in Chiangmai does more then a cursory exam. They check the turn signals, brake lights, head lights (low & high beam), gear operation, brakes, emission test, tire alignment, head light alignment (and adjust them at no extra charge if they are off), steering effectiveness, etc. They do the car VIN number rubbing, both engine block and chassis. They have even pointed out potential problems and recommedatoins. For 150 baht. Since they are licensed to perform the "soo pahp lort" they may be more critical. As far as I can tell these are all "safety checks". I'm sure there are places that will do the absolute minimum, but I feel a little more confident when I see the techs going over the car this thoroughly.

Absolutely. I have the flu today and I am working 6 days a week. Corruption is great, one reason I like Thailand. :o

You must feel like a sak of turd after other people on this forum said YOU were wrong. It might not be what YOU have to do but still doesn't make it right.

When and I know this is a big concept for you but, when you take your vehicle that is over 5 years old to get new registration, you are supposed to have certain checks done on the vehicle. It's not about being "MR. Rightious" it's just that the vehicles need to be checked for safety. I sure as he1! wish there was less corruption in this country if for no other reason than to make the roads safer. How many of those old gray trucks or the baht busses do you see on the road with no tail lights some with only 1 headlight and emmissions that would even choke you. I can't imagine what they do for brakes. I also know many Thais that BUY their drivers license even if they've never owned a vehicle or even know how to drive. Does this make it right?

Corruption is the number one killer of this country, not just in lives but also socially and from an economic standpoint. If you want to just join the crowd, then be a sheep all your life but take your turdsak and preach corruption exceptance somewhere else.

I must say that I'm with kringle on this one, the safety test is important.

BUT

Both times I've taken my car to be 'tested' the test has consisted of driving the car over the inspection pit (nothing about stopping mind you), past the emissions test machine (the operator was too slow to actually do the test) drive round the back of the office, park up, spend 10 minutes looking for the VIN, stamp the paperwork, pay the cash, go home.

NO tea money changed hands, they just didn't bother.

But I DID take my car to be tested, if they had wanted to perform any tests they could and it would have passed (might have failed actually, last time the horn wasn't working, fixed now though).

I have an old, but nice and well maintained BMW 325i, how they would have reacted to an old rattle-trap pickup I don't know, hopefully not in the same way.

Whatever, we all now know about the tests required on 5 year old vehicles.
