Namibia declares flood emergency

2011-03-31 04:05:24 GMT+7 (ICT)

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA (BNO NEWS) -- Namibia's President Hifikepunye Pohamba on Wednesday declared a state of emergency following unprecedented rains and flooding in the northern parts of the country.

At least 62 people have drowned and 247 schools have closed, affecting more than 100,000 pupils. In addition, 22 clinics are under water or completely surrounded by it. Only 25 clinics are accessible, but only by four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Heavy crop and livestock losses are also expected, AllAfrica Global Media reported.

The government has authorized N$30 million ($4 million) to respond to the threatening crisis and widespread destruction of crops and infrastructure.

"As a caring government, it is the duty of the State to ensure that our people do not go hungry," Pohamba said, as cited by AllAfrica.

He also called on all citizens and the international community to assist the government to prevent the worsening of the crisis and its aftermath.

More rain is expected over the next two weeks.
