I'M Looking For A Rav Or Vitara

ChiangMaiFun

Recommended Posts

"Suzi" is a 3 door Vitara, white, 1600cc, carburated engine, 5 speed manual box, Suzuki alloy wheels, full service history and a full member of our family. Here in CM.

If my 5 year old co-driver consents, we might JUST part with her.

PM me giving your own e-mail address for more details and photos. An offer would be welcome, but not an insult.

> all the other jeeps seem far too big for city driving

No issues driving the typical small trucks that are so common in Thailand, or SUVs based on those. Plenty space, plenty parking spots.

Maybe (MAYBE) it would be different with a normal truck, but these tiny things in Thailand.. come on. You're not from Rome or Paris are you? ;)

maybe I should take another look at the CRV

CRV Mk 1 were made in Japan

CRV MK 2 made in ThaIland and had build issues ( ones made in UK were apparently much better). I had the front shocks changed 5 times. Honda stopped replying to emails at the time. They are not very forgiving in corners, average about 10kpl.

CRV MK3 Anyone?

Yes I went to Honda to look at the CRV and hated it - saw a Suzuki Vitara 4x4 and loved it (but it wasn't for sale)

Suzuki Vitara is this was the new version ? Also love it and hate the CRV, Here in Thailand the newer Vitara is 2 wheel drive, they do not import the 4x4

Regarding the CRV, there is one feature my wife loved, the empty space between the two front seats. Just right for the handbag! Look on the website ''www.chiangmai2car.com'', there is one dealer listed on the left hand side of the window with their name in English. He is advertising a 95 auto Vitara. No idea how much your are looking at spending or age. The next size up is the

Chevvy Captiva, otherwise known as the Daewoo Windstar. Rebadged as it comes or at least did, come out of the old Daewoo factory. The Nissan Xtrails which have been mentioned I believe are out of Indonesia. the rav 4 as have been mentioned were not built here, all imported and very expensive, about half a million more than the CRV.

There different in size, the Mini they call here is the 1.8 CDi....... In UK called Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin

'a Pinin 4x4 makes an interesting alternative to the usual small family hatchback'

'The Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin is a real rival to the RAV4'

The Mini Junior same looks but is a lot smaller, and has the 1.1 engine + cost a lot less

Edit:

Mini 1.8 = new 728k for the auto, did not look at the price for the manual.

Mini Junior 1.1 = new 450k

The place where I visited as per photo's is about 30km south from me, so would be about 30km west of BKK, but have seen many places selling them + other never seen or heard of before cars/MPV's/pickups.

I am sure somewhere up there someone is selling them.

Will try to see the people 5 houses down in the Village, they have bought a new one last week. replacing there Land Rover Discovery.

If they're imports then the price is quite low.. Same as a Toyota Corolla et al. And that for a 4x4 vehicle is quite competitive. I assume service and parts is harder than just getting a Fortuner or something.

For the life of me I can't understand why Suzuki doesn't import the 4x4 Vitara. Blasphemy against their own DNA.

this is one of my points - the 4x4 Suzuki is well loved by many - but they don't import it! bizarre but it may be more to do with the Thai owners of the import licence? not sure

Man would have loved to sell you our old Vitara - it was a POS.

The air con worked - but only when it was not too hot. Stranded us at least twice, and had to be towed all the way across the mountains from Pai to CM once.

Developed engine problems and blew the caskets. Very expensive to maintain, this car... and totally overpriced for what it is IMO. Maybe ours was just in bad shape, I don't know.

CRV would be my recommendation.

We have a Fortuna (as they're lovingly called on the TV forums) - rather big for the city it has to be said, but being a Toyota it's never had any issues. For 5 years now. It's still a really nice car. And there was no redesign so it even looks pretty much the same as the brand new model... new CRV is much prettier though, at least IMO.

The quality problems mentioned above - was that the new design CRV, or an older one? Kind of surprising to hear of quality issues as Honda has a pretty good reputation?! Maybe the Thai built ones don't?

PS I do very much like the Rav4, but I also heard they cost a fortune over here, import taxes out of control...

For the money take your pick Rav4 or a BMW X3

A 2001 Mk2 Rav4 for sale @ 1.2 million, or something Thai built Brand new/Year old like a CRV/Fortuna

Still I think for 1.065,000 a brand new Nissan 4x4 X-Trail is a good nice looking SUV.. if 4x4 is a must have, under 700k for the 2005/6 top Luxury model

The other small 4x4 import 2nd hand I like is also a crazy price here the Honda HRV, there are a few driving about and seen a couple for sale

Madness - didn't think it was _that_ bad. $40k for a 10 year old car that's worth $25k to begin with?! Jeez.
