11 persons wounded in explosion in Songkhla

SONGKHLA, April 2 -- Eleven persons - seven civilians and four army rangers - were wounded early Saturday after a bomb suspected to be planted by insurgent and hidden inside a motorcycle exploded in front of a market in the southern district of Thepha in Songkhla province, police said.

Police said the incident took place while many people were shopping at the market, as initial reports said there were two young boys among the civilian victims. Ten of the wounded victims were sent to a nearby hospital in Thepha district except one ranger who suffered serious injuries who was sent to a hospital in Hat Yai district for treatment.

Police, including bomb experts, later combed the area and found shrapnels and pieces of motorcycle parts strewn about 50 metres around the explosion radius.

The bomb, according to market vendors who witnessed the explosion, was hidden inside a stolen motorcycle and driven by an unidentified man who parked his vehicle near the market.

The bomb exploded shortly after the bomber went inside the market, police quoted eyewitnesses as saying. (MCOT online news)
