A slight correction and addition on the above. Finasteride is actually the drug name. It was discovered during trials that a side effect of Finasteride is hair growth/lessons hair loss mainly in the apex (center, back of head.) Propecia is the 1mg non-generic name, can be about 1000-1500 for a box of 28. Proscar is the 5mg brand name version usually proscribed for enlarged prostate gland. I wouldn't take that much if you're using it for hair growth. Not sure on price but definitely over 1000B for a box of 28-30. Firide is the 1mg generic name, usually about 700B for a box of 30, but I have seen pharmacies sell Firide 2 for 1 for 700B.

Best results for hair retention/regrowth is using Rogain (minoxidil) 5% extra strength topical spray or foam along with the Finasteride 1mg pill. I was experiencing hair loss a few years ago and since taking both for about 5 years now defiantly haven't lost any more, and had a few comments that it was thicker from people that didn't know I was taking it.

Finasteride requires a prescription in most places, but in Thailand is sold over-the-counter by most pharmacies like so many other drugs. Some Boots in modern shopping malls wont sell it or Viagra/Cialis without a script. I wouldn't carry it back home in your luggage without a prescription with you, especially to the USA. Can be big trouble.

I actually need it for Prostate problems at 5 MG doses-I actually thought it would be cheaper than figures quoted ??

Proscar brand will be expensive as it is an import.

There are 3 generic equivalent brands, I don't know their respective prices but likely to vary so worth comparing:

Firide

Harifin-5

Prosteride

The Firide and Harifin come in both 1 and 5 mg preparations dso check that they give you the right dose.

Any idea what this drug in 5MG doses may cost over the counter ??

1,500 Baht for about a 5 month supply - if - you're chopping them into 1 MG doses for your hair.

Why doesn't the quote function work for the first OP posts? It never works.

Sheryl,

I've had posts and questions about Xatral and now Proscar. You've answered my posts in a professional manner, thank you. Now, my question is, in your opnion, if i go to the doctor and tell him I have an enlarged prostrate and he asks if I have trouble urinating (slow flow, etc), and I say yes, Why would he give me Xatral (for the urination problem) and not Proscar to shrink the prostrate and therefore, take care of the urination problem?

It is impossible for me to say why the doctor did what he did, I have no way of knowing his reasoning nor am I clear on what information he had at his disposal.

It sounds like your prostate condition had been previously diagnosed elsewhere and he was taking your word for it i.e. had not done any diagnostic work up himself, is that right?

Did he at least do a rectal exam? And was he a urologist (specialist)?

As I trust you know the thing of greatest concern with an enlarged prostate is ruling out prostate cancer. I hope that has already been done in your case and that you get regular check ups. If not, would be best to do this rather than trying to self treat.

Sorry, I should have supplied more information. yes, the doc did do a rectal exam - the urologist at RAM (the guy that should have retired 10 yrs ago). I knew no one could answer my question, I was just venting. Still don't know why he would just prescribe Xatral when he knew I had an enlarged prostrate (have had enlarged prostrate last two years diagnosed from doc in USA). So, I'm thinking, may be best to take Proscar or some generic instead of Xatral to help both my problems - the enlarged prostrate AND the slow/frequent urination situation.

If need be in the future, I will seek out a specialst from Bangkok.

Hi,

I might have missed some information, please correct if I did.

Did you do PSA test recently/ at the consultation?and was it higher than 4 ng/mL?

If not, I think he did the right thing by not giving you Proscar, which will definitely not only reduce the size of prostate but reduce the PSA too.

As urologist have to use PSA to help them making decision whether patients with enlarged prostate should do the biopsy or not to rule out prostate cancer, prescribing Proscar is a bit of substandard treatment then.

While giving away alpha-blocker can reduce your symptom without interfering with PSA, as an important indication to help making a decision in the future, if needed.

As said, If i missed some of your previous information provided, please correct me.

Thanks for your post and info. Yes, I have had my PSA checked annually, always comes out as 1.01, so no concern there. Still having minor urination issues. No more Xatral but am taking the herb Saw Plametto.

Saw Palmetto by itself may not be enough.

Swisse have the best product for prostate function and it is just called prostate.

It has a whole lot of other stuff in there which is helpful for urinary flow issues.

I had the same problem a few years back and tried a few herbal products but the only one that worked for me was Swisse Prostate Formula.

Is Noxidil safe to use for hairloss treatment as it contains minoxidil? I think however that 5mg might be a little too much?

You may want to try a smaller dose to start as many of the studies were done on farily young and healthy men who required more to have the results. A later study actually done on older men onily needed 1 mg to have the desired result. In June I tested my PSA and it was 10 I was having some urination problem but nothing extreme. I take 1mg every other day of finesteride, .5mg of arimedex to lower eatrogen as that was high as well also liquid zinc as a estrogen blocker as well. I just had my blood tested again the PSA is down to 2.7, urination problem gone estrogen down and testosterone up. As I said start out with a lower dose and se what the results will be. Do you know your DHT and PSA levels. Good luck on what ever you do. Also you will notice a change in Libido as you are probably getting your punch from DHT which is molecule is 5 times stronger that a molecule of testosterone. As your DHT is lowered you should produce more testosterone and then your libido should return in 2 to 3 months.

If you take Proscar you should also take Doxazosin together as this is the combination recommended by most doctors and research. Proscar alone doesn't work as well without the other drug. I can tell you this from personal experience.

2 very different things are starting to get confused in this thread: use of finasteride for male pattern baldness, and use of it in treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Same drug but totally different applications involving different dosages.

When Minoxodil is used for baldness, it is used topically (applied as a lotion to the scalp) not taken orally. There are several localy made brands of this, Minodil being one.
