The mother of yellow-shirt activist Veera Somkwamkid Monday sought help from former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to free her son from Phnom Penh prison.

Wilaiwan Somkwamkid appealed for Thasksin's help by submitting a letter to Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit.

Veera and his aide have been sentenced to jail for encroaching and spying on Cambodia.

Wilaiwan asked Thaksin to help coordinate with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen for Veera's release.

BANGKOK, April 4 - The families of two Thai Patriots Network activists detained in Cambodian prison for espionage charges on Monday sought help from the opposition Puea Thai Party and convicted ousted Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra to get them out of jail.

The latest move by the families of detained Veera Somkwamkid and his secretary Ratree Pipattanapaiboon came nearly a month after Mr Veera's mother met with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajia seeking concrete government assistance to help her son on March 8.

Wilaiwan and Preecha Somkwamkid, together with Varisa Pipattanapaiboon, submitted letters to Mr Thaksin through his legal advisor Noppadon Pattama and Puea Thai party spokesman Prompong Nopparit seeking their help to gain the release of the activists who have been in Cambodian jail for four months.

Mrs Wilaiwan said there has been no progress on the release of her son during the past four months and that she fell ill after she found out that Mr Veera was sick when she visited him.

Mr Veera's mother said she has no other choice but to try to secure the release of her son and decided to contact the Puea Thai spokesman to seek help on the case.

Mr Veera's brother Preecha said that the families of the two detainees have met Prime Minister Abhisit twice and handed a letter seeking clear help from the government for the two Thai nationals within seven days, but no progress has been made until now.

Mr Preecha reaffirmed the two families have no conflict with the government, saying the move is just another option to help the pair and that Mr Veera does not know about it.

"Our family only informed Mr Veera that we will do by all means to get him out of jail," said Mr Preecha.

Mr Veera's family earlier sought to get him out of jail as soon as possible after visiting him and finding the 53-year-old activist in weak condition, as he has congenital diseases and has not been given appropriate medical treatment and nutrition while in Preysar Prison.

Mr Veera was sentenced to an eight-year jail term, while Ms Ratree was handed a six-year jail term by a Cambodian court on Feb 1 for espionage, illegal entry, and trespassing in a military zone.

Mr Noppadon said after receiving the letters that he will forward within today the letter to the fugitive ex-premier who is now travelling in the Middle East.

Mr Thaksin's legal advisor said he believed the former premier would discuss the matter with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen but cannot give a date yet.

He however said Mr Veera himself should also acknowledge and accept assistance from Mr Thaksin as the issue is sensitive and involved with politics. (MCOT online news)

The mother, Wilaiwan Somkwamkid, together with her younger son Preecha Somkwamkid, met Thaksin's close aide Noppadon Pattama and opposition Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit to submit the request to Thaksin.

Veera and another activist, Ratree Pipattanapaiboon, are being held in Cambodia's Prey Sar prison for eight and six years respectively on espionage charges.

Veera and Ratree were arrested together with five other Thai nationals, including Democrat Party's MP Panich Vikitsreth, on December 29 while inspecting a border disputed area near Sa Kaew province's Ban Nongchan. The five members of the group were freed when their jail terms for trespassing were suspended.

"We have waited for the government's assistance for four months but there was no progress. We have no other way, but hope the Pheu Thai Party and Police Colonel Thaksin could help us, Wilaiwan said.

Veera, who actively joined the street protests to topple Thaksin in 2006, does not know his family is seeking help from his enemy, his brother Preecha said. "We don't mind about the politics but just simply look for people who could help him," he said.

You are right Taksin should be more polite and explain to her that her son is a big enough man to partake of toppling a government, so he should be a big enough man to do 2/3 of his jail time before release, or the whole time to show he is an even bigger man.

I understand a mother's plight and seeking help anywhere she can find it.

Still I'm really surprised at what some people think the level of influence k. Thaksin may have with the Cambodian government. Mind you just out of spite Cambodia might pardon the two (even against their will) if k. Thaksin well publicized asks for it.

PM Understands Relatives of Jailed Thais Seeking Thaksin's Help

The prime minister says he does not feel embarrassed that relatives of the two Thais jailed in Cambodia is seeking help from the Pheu Thai Party and Thaksin Shinnawatra.

He says the Thai government has worked hard to help, but there are still complication that need to be worked out.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjachewa insists that he and the government do not feel ashamed after family members of Veera Somkwamkit and Ratree Pipatthanapaiboon, who are being jailed in Cambodia for trespassing and espionage, have asked Pheu Thai Party and Thaksin Shinnawatra for assistance.

He pointed out that the government is trying to help the two Thais, but admitted that the issues between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as legal conditions, remain major obstacles to securing the release of the two Thais.

Abhisit said he understands and feels for the families of the two Thais.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security Suthep Thuaksuban denied a rumor that he is awaiting Thaksin Shinnawatra's arrival and will clean the former premier's shoes.

He said this is a misunderstanding about what he said to the Democrat Party in the southern local language that he would wear a necktie and suit and wait for Thaksin at the airport to take him to jail, if Thaksin was actually able to return to Thailand.

In following the events which lead up to his incarceration and in reading the articles on this thread; I had abso-tively, posi-lutely NO IDEA that extremely poor judgment (insofar as purposely wandering into Cambodia), and/or border-line stupidity (as in having a BAD history with HunSen and still doing it) fell under the category of "congenital diseases"!!

I also didn't know that medications were currently available to remedy these particular maladies!

Before I state what I am about to say I want everyone to know it can be taken as a joke.

Thaksin assists in Veera and Ratree release. But the deal is Thailand forgives Thaksin his criminal record and he can return to run in the election for prime minster. Everyone gets something out of the deal.

in other words no deal because forgiving Thaksin his crimes in exchange for his helping another person who blatantly and purposefully committed a crime, is totally countrary to the whole point of having borders and legal system to prosecute criminal trespass.

Not to mention:

Why would Abhisit want to give a free pass to someone financing groups that say they want to kill him if they can and is doing all he can to remove him from office, and doing it for someone who has worked so hard to put Thailand in a war with its neighbor and ALSO wants to remove him from office.
