Mapsource On Laptop And Gps?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if I install MapSource and use the maps from Rotweiller on my laptop with GPS, can it actually be used like a Garmin unit? I like the idea of the LARGER screen and I am always navigating while the wife drives anyway. It would also give me an excuse to bring my lappy with me ;)

Thanks.

Are you saying that your laptop has an internal GPS and navigation software installed? Normally MapSource is used to load or edit mapping data to a Garmin device.

I have a GPS unit for my laptop. It outputs data that is parsed by navigation software, so I was just wondering if Mapsource was loaded would it display my current position.

Thanks

MapSource is not navigation software per se, it is a mapping software tool used to load and edit maps for Garmin devices. Whether or not MapSource with a Rotweiler map installed would parse data from a GPS receiver accessory is unknown, my guess is NO. MapSource with a Rotweiler map does display the GPS (WGS 84) coordinates for the cursor.

Aidenai, Garmin Mobile PC is a discontinued product, see link you included. Also, the OP was asking about MapSource.

It's still available on the net.

OP asked about software to use a laptop as PND.

For those of you that absolutely need Garmin Mobile PC there are a few remaining from Amazon.com. Make sure you get or have a Garmin GPS receiver that works with the software you purchase. There are two versions, either USB or Bluetooth. Remember this is a discontinued Garmin product with limited or no support.

^ Thanks, InterestedObserver. :jap: Besides Amazon, there's also a gray circuit.

I have Garmin Mobile PC version 5.00.70 working on my laptop with my Nokia E71 as GPS receiver via Symarctic ExtGPS software. Works like a charm. :)

Symarctic ExtGPS allows you to use your phone's built-in GPS module externally on laptop via Bluetooth. It is mainly targeted for Nokia N95, E90, 6110 Navigator handsets, allowing you to use existing, more sophisticated GIS applications.

Aidenai, How are you unlocking your Garmin maps to the Garmin Mobile PC software or are you using Nokia (Ovi) maps or some other such as Google Maps?
