Just remind me how many people were killed over Songkran, how many buckets of water were thrown into the faces of motorcyclists causing a some to fall off, I know of one young girl that was killed in such an incident and people are causing such a fuss over these two young women having fun - pathetic.

Interesting comment about water in bikers faces... 1,000km around towns and villages and I didn't once see any bikes in danger nor was I "assaulted" whilst in motion. Oh and befoer you say "farang" I wear a full face with tinted visor and gloves which means you cant tell... I know from my chats with the BIB.

Guess it depends where you are.

That apart, dancing naked in the street is wrong.

Posting it on the net doesn't help.

The fact that the country has a tarnished reputation is all the more reason to clamp down don't you think...

Well I was assaulted 3 times in 10km later in the afternoon that day.

And watched many people get similar treatment.

The mart ones slow or stop and get treated nicely.

Most who go fast are afraid of the ice water dousings,

not the water of normal temperature.

I don't know wether I agree or disagree with this. Its a hard one morally for me. On one hand I think, its a party and a hundred years ago women walked bare breasted anyway. On the other hand Thai culture is slipping away and I can understand why people want to keep their cultural identity, especially with much of the west to hold up as a "shining" example of were you end up if you allow the cultural decline to go unchecked.

As far as the YouTubers go, if they staged it it could be argued I supposed that it was a direct attempt to slur or debase; however, if it was just some guys that caught it on camera and then posted it - and it was done in public - then they should not be charged at all IMO.

More like 70 years ago.

well done , one image speaks more than 10000 words;)

not sure why this is not being exploited as Amazing Thailand tourist propaganda. Let's wait and see if the number of tourists increases next year. In Key West Florida, during Fantasy Fest over the Halloween weekend, all the girls and guys can go topless anywhere any time. Good for tourism and maybe if they take the mystery out of it, it won't be so lusted after. Prohibit it and they want it, allow it and it loses it's novelty.

The clip was pulled from YouTube? On who's authority? Some Thai ponce is controlling the world wide web? I doubt it.

Have you never used Youtube? Nudity is not allowed. Except for educational material, there are some videos of breast examinations but that's all you will ever find there.

breasts can be shown on youtube if it's deemed as mature content and those watching must log in and "prove" they are 18 or above. Anyone can flag a youtube video and it's instantly shut down, youtube doesn't check. I've lost count of how many of my youtube accounts have been flagged and deleted by youtube probably by other marketers competing for the sale of the same product. Try to contact youtube, good luck!

What prioriies does Thailand have in a week when 299 die due to road incidents NOT "mishaps"as has been opined . More enforcement of laws by the Police

Now some girls will be punished for this.

Thailand=hypocrisy, nothing ever changes.

Many popular holiday places have quite dreadful crime rates - indeed Thailand is probably quite low in that list (violent crime against tourists).

According to the FCO Thailand is the most dangerous tourism destination for Britons.

I believe it is for Australians also now, last year overtook Indonesia now that more Aussies are travelling here.

Calm down mate, it's only a bit of fun. The reason Thailand has this reputation is because the western press picks up on sensationalism and blows it out of proportion. Thai prostitues who started coming to the west in the early 1990s were picked up by the press who then travelled to Thailand to see it first hand.

Actually Thailand's reputation for licentiousness was spread by the very first and then every subsequent Westerner to visit here.

Now they are embarrassed of their reputation abroad and want some sort of conservative society which I believe is incompatible with their sanuk and mai bpen rai culture.

WOW! A 500 fine for Topless dancing in the streets..That old fart probably went home and boned his ole lady after that! Thats the kind of hypocritic person who probably has a couple of women

other than his ole lady he's been boning on the side. Obvisiously he hasn't been in Pattaya, Patpong, Nana, or the Soi Cowboy etc etc etc. The bottom line is that Thailand has given itselft the

reputation it has...

UPDATE

Topless trio to surrender and BMA to take over Silom revelry next year

By The Nation

Published on April 19, 2011

Three Thai women who appeared in news photographs and Internet video clips dancing topless in Bangkok's Silom area during Friday night's Songkran celebration, contacted police yesterday to surrender and face charges.

The women will be charged with exposing themselves in public and obscene behaviour, which is punishable by a Bt500 fine.

After contacting police they reportedly postponed their meeting for another two days because of media attention.

Large crowds of onlookers would not be prosecuted for cheering and urging the women to remove their tops, police spokesman Maj General Prawut Thawornsiri said.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is considering hosting the Songkran celebration at Silom next year in a bid to strictly enforce an alcohol ban and prevent topless dancing, such as that on Friday.

BMA deputy spokesman Wasan Meewong said the BMA executive agreed yesterday that Songkran celebrations it hosted this year were successful, especially the setting of a new Guinness World Record at CentralWorld when about 3,400 people fired water pistols at one another non-stop for 10 minutes on April 13.

The BMA plans to host next year's Songkran celebration at Rajprasong, Wasan said. The BMA did not host the celebration at Silom, which had issues of alcohol sales and women dancing topless, so it would host the event next year to try to ensure such things do not recur and the celebration were more orderly, he said.

The government doesn't set good exampled for itself. Rampant cheating and blatant criminals getting away with everything simply because they're wealthy is a good example for every Thai to follow. Oh yeah. Keepin' it up, Amazing Thailand.

Yeah, if I had a daughter I would just LOVE for these topless drunks to be reading them bedtime stories and setting good examples. NOT.

On the otherhand, I wouldn't mind them reading ME bedtime stories... though I wonder about me two boys...

Love the way this becomes 'the government's fault'!

How serious can the police be? Tarnishing Thailand's image?

Just meters away, on Pat Pong Rd, the tourist scammers have been involved with extorting/defrauding tourists in the "upstairs bar" robbery scam.

Reports all over the web detailing police involvement.

bangkokscams website has hundreds of reports filed by tourists that have been robbed...

You are really confused here. As has been said, most of the casualties on the roads were not "accidents" but the result of voluntary actions. Drinking before and during driving, driving without seat belts, without helmets on bikes, too many people on a bike, overloaded trucks, keeping speeds exceeding the driver's capability etc. Most of these casualities were avoidable since they were the result of a voluntary decision by someone. And the comparison between the outcry in Thai media over the three girls and the indifference to the dead people is perfectly valid. Your conclusions are without base.

Hear, hear!

According to your comments, road accidents in Thailand are not "accidents" they are planed voluntary suicides of the drivers themselves on the one hand, and the murders of others including members of their families and friends on the other.

Well, those comments are very odd indeed, certainly not realistic, and reflective of something, nevertheless you are entitled to your opinion, good luck.

My ultra conservative Thai wife and I just discussed the matter of public nudity and the 'incident', which she heard on the Thai news and her opinion is that IT'S ALL ABOUT 'SHOW' and it's ok for Thai women to do all the nasty things they do in the bars, but in public......you have to be 'proper'.

I then pointed out that Thai women went topless before the christians put cloths on them [same as many other innocent cultures they invaded and shoved their moralities down their throats]......she denied that Thai women went topless and I pointed out some of the beautiful art work from the past with the topless women and she said 'that's just art' and the women did wear tops [pre christian]

Is that true??

Absolutely more harmful to Thai culture [tourism draw] than the drunken teenagers throwing filthy klong water by the full buckets at oncomming motorcycles. and much more harmfull than the road deaths that happen every year at this insane celebration.

get your priorities straight!!!

I'd say this it ..... happens everywhere.... to be fair ..... they should issue arrest warrant to Homosexual groups who expose their boobs in public too.. (Alcaza Pattaya everynite after the show).....

It's not as severe as the death toll of 300, bitch celebs, bike gangs or more... .....

They see it as the degradation of Thai Society though...

That comparison is not appropriate, the 300 deaths were causes of accidents, not voluntary activities, the lifting of the girls shirts or blouses to expose their XYZ's were not caused by accidents, they were voluntary activities and thus illegal, hence the fines.

Drinking booze before getting into a car and then smashing the car up is a voluntary activity and is also illegal...:whistling: ......therefore the vast majority of the 300 deaths were not "accidents"....:jap:

agree, where this has been the case. In many other instances, drink need not even be factor, but substitute 'accident' for 'stupidity' where people jump out and throw buckets of water over passing motorcyclists, for example. No accidents, since nearly all the Songkran deaths could be avoided if it had not become socially tolerated to behave in such manners... Such acts are far more disgraceful than a couple of girls who were having fun WITHOUT having put anyone's life in danger.

But I think that the BiB have the power to apply two laws at once; for example, controlling public lasciviousness and traffic lunacy at the same time. The fact that the latter seems beyond their control is no reason to abandon every other clause in the statute book

I don't know wether I agree or disagree with this. Its a hard one morally for me. On one hand I think, its a party and a hundred years ago women walked bare breasted anyway. As far as the YouTubers go, if they staged it it could be argued I supposed that it was a direct attempt to slur or debase; however, if it was just some guys that caught it on camera and then posted it - and it was done in public - then they should not be charged at all IMO.

Once again Thailand has become the laughing stock, the article in the NY times today says it all.

If Thailand wants the world to take them seriously about this issue then there is only one solution; close down ALL go go bars and similar ilk. Arrest and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone involved in prostitution.

Unbelievable; the world is really laughing and pointing the finger at Thailand now; silly, silly, silly.:bah:

I suppose that is because the Americans don't understand about face and respect; there is an appropriate time and place, and in this case, that should have been after 8 pm behind a heavy velvet curtain.

When you say "anyone involved in prostitution" I take it you are primarily focussing on foreign tourists, the hoteliers that accommodate them, the people that rent rooms to prostitutes, the people that sell them som tam, the bar owners that employ them as dancers, the other bar owners whose premises they patronise, and single mothers struggling to support their offspring - and presumably, also the fathers of said offspring, who contribute in their own inimitable way. And presumably, the rest of us, lest we feel left out - we have probably contributed or benefited in some way in any case

Yes, regards what goes on in go-gos, etc, it's very hypocritical; but this is all about the nature of the event (very public) and that Songkran WAS supposed to be about paying respect to elders. To be fair, so-called culture (sanook) has allowed this to happen... all of Thailand is to blame for allowing it to come this far from its humble beginnings, and the high-ups who are blowing this out of proportion need to because they have to be seen to be going over the top. Face, face, face, or mammaries in this case. The whole thing is OTT now.

The girls were topless in public and should be fined. They violated the law, no question. The point has been made that Thailand is hypocritical by enforcing this law and allowing topless bars, etc. This does not make sense. In most countries there are topless bars, but you cannot dance topless on the street. What saddens me about the situation is the corruption of sonkran to a drunken water spraying festival instead of the simple and traditional spiritual anointing of frangrant water on others as a blessing after pouring it over an image of Buddha at a wat. This is a new generation of Thais and the old ways are being forgotten or dismissed. I suspect that the publicity that the government is giving this incident is diversionary. Hundreds of people were killed over the holiday. This is also a poor reflection on the country; drunken drivers killing others during the holiday. The best news to place on the fron page is moral indignation with the young Thai girls dancing topless. The government has used such tactics for decades. Officials actively manipuilate the media through deals or friendship. The media self censors. Look at Wikileaks and the censored sections printed here and the originals if you can access them. Thousands of websites are banned by the goverment. The local papers have to find foreign articles from foreign newspapers that discuss corruption in goverment and translate them beside the original article in order to provide the Thais with pertinent news stories (unless a story is leaked by a politician for politacal purposes to a friendly paper). The western article can be attributed to Thai bashing "farangs" and will not get the reporters in trouble, except of course for publishing the foreign news. The UK tv series "Big trouble in Thailand" was banned in Thailand. I watched it. Not that bad. Mainly a bunch of drunk foreigners and the police (odddly volunteer western police) dealing with it. Books have been banned and the writers imprisoned as is well known. Face is no excuse for the violation of free speech to report facts. If you read something in the news here that is out of the ordinary, most likely it has been approved with a dinner meeting or exchange of money for a calculated reason.

My wife remembers when the village women went topless...so at least in Issan, it was the norm years ago...
