12 dead, hundreds affected during Easter break in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (BNO NEWS) -- Twelve people died and 360 others were injured or affected during Easter celebrations in Dominican Republic, authorities said Saturday, the local newspaper Hoy reported.

The Emergency Operations Center said in a bulletin that nine people were killed in traffic accidents, while two died from alcohol poisoning and one from drowning. It added that so far 324 people were injured in traffic accidents, 21 suffered alcohol poisoning and 15 food poisoning.

Authorities launched on Thursday an operation with more than 35 volunteers to prevent fatal accidents during Easter break.
