Secruity Beefed up for 7th Anniversary of Krue Se Mosque Massacre

Yala Province's security authorities have stepped up security in preparation for possible violence on Thursday, the 7th anniversary of the Krue Se mosque massacre.

As Thursday will mark the 7th anniversary of the Krue Se mosque massacre, Yala security authorities have beefed up security to the maximum, including additional security volunteers deployed to safeguard the province's city hall.

All vehicles entering or passing through city hall will be subject to a thorough search.

The province may be vulnerable to violence as southern insurgents previously planned several attacks on this anniversary.

In the most recent southern violence, Governor of Pattani Province Niphon Narapitakkul and other officials narrowly escaped a bomb attack while traveling on Sai Buri- Panareh Road.

Local police stations have been instructed to adopt stricter protocols in checking for suspicious vehicles, particularly those that may have been stolen for use in attacks.

Security has also been increased at public venues and power facilities, to prevent possible attacks.

Court Order Sought to Politically Ban Former Minister

The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions has accepted a petition filed by the anti-graft panel seeking a ban on a former education minister.

The court has scheduled its first reading for June 9.

The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions has accepted the petition filed by the National Anti-corruption Commission asking the court to impose a ban on former education minister Somsak Pritsananantakul from politics for five years, as well as other penalties for his criminal offenses according to Article 119 of the Corruption Prevention and Suppression Act.

The anti-graft panel previously found Somsak guilty of concealing assets and financial records.

He allegedly failed to declare 8.7 million baht worth of assets held in a bank account when he was a House and Cabinet member.

The court has forwarded a copy of the petition to the defendant, who has been given 30 days to submit a counter statement.

The first heariing is scheduled for June 9 at 10 A.M.
