I have a Thai spousal 1 year extension on a non-imm visa and a re-entry permit. I am currently in my home country, not in Thailand. My passport is literally falling apart so I'm going to have to get a new one. What do I do when I return to Thailand?

I have heard that I can just carry my old passport, which will be clipped, and my new passport - and then show them both at immigration at the airport when I return to Thailand - and I will be let into the country. I have also heard that I will then have to go to the immigration office where the extension was given (in Chiang Mai) and there get the extension transferred into my new passport. If that is true then what happened at the airport with my new passport before? Did it just get an entry-stamp and nothing more? Or did it get a temporary stamp of some kind: a "report to CM immigration in 1 week"-stamp perhaps???

This must happen all the time. I'd appreciate an answer or a comment from someone who knows or has experienced and resolved this situation. Help!

You have been told right. Immigration will stamp you in and tell you to go to your immigration ofice to have the details transferred. They won't give you a time frame, but do it soon after.

Thank you!

AFAIK my passport is sent to Bangkok when I get my "spousal visa" and it takes a lot of time. Do you know if the transfer of the visa/re-entry permit etc happens at my local imm. office or do they have to send it all to Bangkok again?

A few years ago I had a similar problem while in my home country. I contacted my local Thai Embassy/Consulate, and they told me to send them a cover letter explaining the situation and the two passports. They did the transfer there, and no fees incurred other than my travel or send post to the Thai Embassy/Consulate.

And as mario has said, the other alternate is they will do it at your local immigration after you arrive in country.

Your aplication is send to Bangkok for approval in case of an extension of stay based on marriage. Not your passport, you keep that. Also the approval comes from Bangkok, but the extension is still given by your local immigration office.

Transfer of details is done on the spot. Simply provide a copy of the old passport and tm-card and fill in a form. Takes about 10 minutes

Is the original non-imm visa noted in the new passport, or just the extensions? I suppose you can't move an actual visa, so I guess there's a need to carry both old and new passports as a result?

The visa is noted in the new passport, but indeed not moved to the new passsort. So, yes, you need both passports. But only if you still have a valid mutiple entry visa in your old passport. Once the visa is used or expired, you can no longer use it and don't need to show it anymore. So when on extensions of stay, you only use the new passport.

I have a similar situation - extension of stay in a passport which I need to get renewed while I am back in UK. Does anyone know if the fact that showing both passports on arrival in Thailand is acceptable to Immigration, is known to airline check-in staff in the UK? I have been asked before to show a valid visa, when not having a return or onward ticket - my non-O visa is now expired, but will the check-in staff accept a valid extension of stay in a cancelled passport as proof that I won't be refused entry to Thailand?

Thanks to anyone who knows or has done this.

Getting an airline to even accept an extension of stay can be an issue in itself (had EVA question mine twice in US) but it is normal to have valid stamps in old passports so should not be more of an issue than normal. Tourist visas to US are 10 years so almost all end up being in an old passport at some point and most countries do have experience with them.

Thanks very much lopburi3, and thanks in advance to anyone else who has good or bad experience to share of this situation at check-in.
