TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

Police road safety campaign begins today

BANGKOK: Metropolitan police today begin their traffic safety campaign, to ensure smooth traffic on major roads and safety for holidaymakers.

Deputy metropolitan police commissioner Pol Maj-Gen Montri Chamroon has prepared a special traffic management plan for the city between Dec 24 and Jan 4, the Christmas and New Year season.

Under the plan, police stations in precincts where shopping malls are located must position traffic officers along major and connecting routes to ensure traffic flows smoothly.

Police will also manage traffic at all bus terminals and railway stations in Bangkok from 2pm on Dec 30 and Jan 4, and from 5am on Dec 31, Jan 1 and Jan 5.

Random searches will be made of vehicles using outbound lanes on all roads from 8pm-10pm and midnight-2am on Dec 30-31 and Jan 1.

To prevent road accidents from drunk driving and speeding, alcohol breath tests will be made on bus drivers at the northern , southern and eastern-route bus terminals on the same days. Speed detectors will be in operation on the expressways and all highways.

Rescue equipment will be on standby, with help from highway police and regional police for those in need.
