Pheu Thai Party Offers Tablets To Thai Students

16 years in Thailand and have never met any parents that gamble (which includes drinking) with their kids.

During a visa run I saw children with their parents gambling in a casino at the Pong Nam Ron border a month ago. I can't remember whether the parents were drinking or smoking but other players at the table and other tables were. The children themselves were playing, as were their parents.

Why don't you read his post before you answer? Guess it was about the life in a village and NOT in a casino.:jap:

He'd be better off giving them a cheap mobile phone each.

Thais are obsessed with mobile phones they can't get enough of them. I know one girl who has 2 Iphone 4's and 3 BB's!!!!

and very likely 5 farang boyfriends who bought them for her........

The majority of Thais I see in the malls are capable of buying or their family buying the phones they crave.

If this fantasy ever comes to pass, how would they pay for it? Raise the excise tax on fuel/sugar/milk? Tax the very people who put you in office the highest percentage per income?

Oh no - money's free in this country to make whatever promise you want to win office. :bah:

A program like this would cost around 50,000,000,0000B to impliment. (5mil students x 10,000B a pop including infrastructure).

8mil x 16,900 + infrastructure + support =

.

You forgot the extra 45% umhhh errhhhh ........ administrative costs.

Would i be stupid in thinking that as the students are getting tablets (should PTP win) then the teachers will be taught how to utilise the tablets in a class room environment. :o

Don't be daft, the students probably already know very well how to use these tablets to play games, get to facebook / hi5, etc. It's the teacher's who lag behind in this :whistling:

You won't see the majority of Thais in a shopping mall, because most of them have no money. :jap:

Information gathered from some posts here would suggest that Thailand is indeed fortunate that the current government has not revealed plans to dramatically expand the availability of internet infrastructure to schools and universities.

The comments would suggest Thailand cannot afford this educational up turn.

Many of the comments also suggest the Thai students are not particularly willing to learn but would abuse any internet tool playing games or listening to music..............

In my opinion this is clear evidence of the underestimation of Thailand and the Thai people by ignorant blinkered foreigners.....

A tablet is not really much of a gaming PC but makes a great device for providing a complete library right in the hands of the user anywhere.

The government will not have to give them away. They can issue them and pass them along. i.e. school property one library book fits all readers kind of thing an over sized library card.

The biggest road block to information dissemination will be the lose of the printing contracts and copy rights of the currently run by the elite crap that is pumped out. Killing trees while making mostly worthless crap at tax expense, while they make their personnel profit from it and have done so for 80 years. Ever seen some of the crap text in the local schools. Vary limited amount of information as well.

Maybe the PM should buy back some of the votes by using the idea a better way. Oh - but wait - first ToT and CAT will have to find the 25% of every telecoms baht they already stole from the Thai consumers and then never provided most of the infrastructure that was promised it would provide. Here is a great idea - lets start by selling them.

How about a feed to each school that rss's a local server base - you know - a real library that has everything the central one has in it. This is cheaper then you think, and can be used by more then just the kids. If the local wi-fi connects to the server base they can't get anything but what is provided by the system via local IP addresses so the DSI and MICT can relax - no porn or red radio in the school yard.

Set aside the love of hating for a few minutes and think of a way to make it work for the kids - rather then just another spun up hate feast of Thaksin whom is not even mentioned in the OP Right!

Thinking outside the box and coloring outside the lines.:jap:

Didn't do the math but the price of a few used Sub's would buy a few tablets and you don't even have to buy some just for the parts.:o

Lots of Thai in shopping malls for at least two reasons:

- window shopping

- free air conditioning

What would happen if a student loses (unintentionally or intentionally (e.g. sold)) his free tablet computer? The parents may not be able to afford to pay for a replacement. Would the government have to pay for a replacement so that the student can participate in classroom activities that require the computer? Or would insurance pay... then insurance would need to be purchased for every tablet computer, which would raise the cost and would be another opportunity for graft.

Dumbest idea yet! Hope it never happens! Better to save money and spend it on more teachers and teaching supplies.

So you think MORE teachers will help ? or solve the problem of uneducation in LoS ...funny idea, better give them more tablet pc`s or laptops, so

they can take care for themselfs, play and chat all day etc. Who needs education and WHO NEEDS EDUCATED CITIZENS ? keep them stupid and they dont

start asking questions....AND the teachers can go on with their usual business  :jap:

Most Thai children I know take savings to school every week, they could be asked for a deposit which would cover insurance? the deposit returned if the equipment is returned

Of course I am using my local education village school as an example.....

That's because you weren't here when Thaksin* was running the place. If you were, you'd hate him too.

As said before no issues with Thaksin then, he is history.......................if only because one assumes most of the voters being Thai, they were here when he was running the place......and obviously will agree with your sentiments..........

Too many good things here:

As for the OP, there was a report the other day that Thaksin's overseas mining and other investments weren't doing so good... Must be looking to get into the tablets business, instead...

But I have a better alternative: Instead of providing tablets that would be largely useless to those who most need them, how about providing a TRAINED TEACHER in each classroom who hasn't bought their degree from some bogus university.... Ohh, right, no kickbacks on that...

As for the phones girl:

--just because she's happily married and a multimillionaire, that doesn't mean she can't also have 5 farang boyfriends on the hook... If she's a hottie, that is..

--and, how did she get to be a "multi-millionaire" if she doesn't know how to use a mobile phone...

--But more importantly, I've never met any Thai woman who doesn't know very well how to use whatever fancy mobile phone they may possess.... They may not know a laptop from a llama....but mobile phones they know...

Sounds a bit strange...

Believe me she doesn't know how to use any functions other than messaging and calls. cannot add names to address book.

Rich.... born into it. Runs her own company. Investments everywhere (corruption too). Pays everyone to do things for her. She;s a real bitch as a boss but a good friend.

Anyway back to the topic.

It would be better to invest more in education of the kids (both schools and teachers) than to give them something that 80 % will use for playing games.

You think it is not possible to do both?.............limited vision I think.........

Disagree... the majority of Thais do in fact go to the malls; free airconditioning!

I forgot to mention she has an Ipad, 2 Mac laptops.

It's amazing how you guys have a one track mind and class all girls as being like that.

No, she is a friend of my wife. She is a multimillionaire and happily married. She just hasn't a clue how to use the phones.

my apologies then

normally x1 phone = x1 boyfriend

i am heterosexual and have 3 phones ...draw your own conclusions.....

Absolutely. How about reducing class sizes? How about reforming the way that teachers are trained? How about reforming the curriculum?

Improved IT highways...access to all students during learning time.....train teachers to be more IT literate.......allows larger classes.......on line courses which allow teachers more time for supervision.......easier monitoring of childs progress...........

Maybe the tablet PC is the way to remove out moded teaching practices.......

Maybe you should have had a fancy learnin book when you skipped school. Learn how to spell first, then bitch about something you know nothing about. Give them a comp, <deleted>. Are you paying for it????

Hmm, yes? I'm paying for it and any other cockamamie scheme politicians come up with.

Some foreigners actually pay taxes here.

While only 17% of the working Thai population pay taxes ...

Good points apart from "allows larger classes" If the classes were any larger, you'd have to knock two classrooms into one!

I do have some doubts : it is easier searching the internet for the answer, easier copying and pasting from the internet, easier to get things done without having to think things through etc.

You are right, that PCs or tablet PCs can be useful tools in the classroom. However, for learning a foreign language, I think there is no substitute for learning face to face with someone who can speak the language fluently.
