No More Flights at Don Muang Airport After 2015

The Transport Ministry has received the master infrastructure development plan for Suvarnabhumi Airport.

It suggests the discontinuation of Don Muang Airport in 2015.

Permanent-Secretary for Transport Supoj Saplom said his ministry has received the master plan for infrastructure development at Suvarnabhumi Airport from the International Civil Aviation Organization or ICAO.

He noted that ICAO's plan corresponds to the suggestion by International Air Transport Association, of a single airport.

Supoj added that the development plan consists of two phases.

The first phase involves a 22-billion-baht investment, from 2012 to 2015.

The second phase is from 2015 to 2020, with an investment value of 43.8 billion baht.

He said flights will continue to operate at Don Muang Airport until 2015, after which the old airport will be used as an aircraft maintenance depot, according to recommendations by the Airport of Thailand or AOT.

The permanent-secretary further stated that the AOT will need to finalize all the plans by the end of May before sending them back to his ministry for consideration, particularly the one detailing investments during the different phases, as it has been modified from the original version previously approved by the Cabinet.

How sad.

I hope this plan is changed before the decommissioning date arrives. Don Muang is so much nicer to fly out of than that abomination in Cobra Swamp.

breaks my heart. it was always fun going really far out of town to get a flight. and the inadequate lighting and lack of decorations bring back warm fuzzy memories.

I loved the experience of arriving at Don Muang Airport and emerging into the street to catch the Airport Bus. A special moment to savour.

You can't take anything these people say as being final, at one stage they were going to reopen it then they changed there minds again, silly people two aiports are better than one! I just hope this doesn't effect the 'Red' line from Bang Su to Rangsit.

Unlikely as that was never intended to serve DM airport, the ARL Extension was however. I expect that it will be placed on hold (again) until someone changes their mind (again).

How sad.

Sad? Could be disastrous mate! 8.15 tonight and planes will be falling out of the sky as every traffic controller, they have 3 in the week and one at weekends, juggles the flying juggernauts and then suddenly ups for the exit door.

The mass carnage of planes dropping onto Bangkok as they run out of fuel will take a bit more explaining than 'a misunderstanding' which is what the Press are usually allowed to run when the likes of the army slaughter around 80 poor souls by way of suffocation in the back of a lorry down south, or Thaksin has bumped 2500 all over the country as they may have been somewhere near a man travelling at 100 kph in a pick-up with two tabs of yaba in his police uniform pocket.

8.15 then. May make the nine o'clock news somewhere between 'Dog barks Lottery numbers' and ' Thai serial killer released for good behaviour'.

Personally, I think its all a ruse to have Thailand become a hub for International airport closures, along with its long tern strategy as a hub for coups, anus transplants, human and drug traffiking. After all, the Thai Police recently were in advanced negotiations with their Colombian counterparts to have drug mules journey through Suwanaphum. They offerred the Columbian drug cartels a special offer of send two get one free, with early release from the Bangkok Hilton's cell block 'B'.

A special mention should be made to Thailand's famous health care provision and its leadership in transgendering. Also, its role in plastic surgery where it separates persons from their plastic ATM cards quite painlessly. In fact, that express service for Americans will do nicely as an example of the real Land of Smiles.

Back to the chase ......... The Columbians reminded the Thai Police they were already including a thousand under 7 year old girls as part of the deal. However, the Thai side rebuffed that with their claim that Pattaya couldn't take any more girls under age - under 7's and that Pedophile Tourism had peaked for the last 9 years running since they offered the first ' All You Can Abuse Buffet' at leading Pattaya Hotels. As if to add insult to injury, the Thais added proudly that they've completely reinvented the meaning of ' National Children's Day.' And added that the award winning slogan ' Pattaya - Incest on the best' had been endorsed by Canadian fugitives through Russian Concert pianists and tht playing with your balls in Pattaya meant a whole lot more than tennis at the Dusit, or Jimmy White with a touch of side at the Nova. Back side being his preference.

Planes alomg with bed heads, Pattaya's infamous dead heads and the bottom of the dregs aren't then the only things that'll be going bump at 8.15 tonight.

Oh dear!!!

What they need is a market based solution with competing airports owned by different companies.

Some Soviet style paper pusher decreeing that a perfectly good airport shall close to create a monopoly on the other side of town will be bad for the consumer and bad for efficiency.

Aren't both airports owned by the government? The monopoly is already there. The paper pusher just decreed that there is no point spreading the expenses over two airports.

What was all that about ??? wouldn't it be good to talk about the Airport mentioned, rather than trying to get a journalistic award. Your content is always lengthy but interesting at times.

Anyway on topic, It does seem sad to close a place that was so well positioned to Bkk and all transport links, Just because no one could ask the air force to leave, giving us the all the runways and room needed. The small amount of cash needed to re furbish the old dear, would have been chicken feed compared to the corrupt ridden swampy deal.

Not to mention the smell ... the scads of touts .. and the exit from International into a 10m wide hallway by the exits .. so you HAD to run the gauntlet of the touts!

For a minute I thought that housepainter was joking, then I realized he really DID miss that 2015 and 20:15 are not the same ;)

i think a good idea would be have both operating flights.bangkok has the capacity to use both successfully

well, they tried that at the beginning and then they had the problem that people kept going to the wrong airport. i remember having to wait over an hour on the tarmac because they had to shuttle people who went to the wrong airport. the capacity and infrastructure, yes, the managerial skills, absolutely not.
