I'm from the USA. Is the double entry visa the correct one to apply for if I want to consider retirement in Thailand. I have all the qualifications. I think 6-12 months is a good time line to use to be able travel ,live and experience Thailand.

A single entry non immigrant O visa would be the normal choice as with that you can directly extend your stay for retirement after 60 days. Extension of stay only costs 1,900 baht so if you decide later to leave you do not lose anything. But it really does not matter that much as you can obtain visas from countries in the area anytime.

You extend your stay at Immigration inside Thailand for one year using bank deposit/income or combination to meet the requirements. The cost is 1,900 baht and you use TM.7 form. There is no problem opening a bank account (but it might take visits to several banks) and you should have a wire transfer agreement in place with your US bank prior to arrival so that you can set up transfers by internet/phone/fax or whatever - often basic paperwork has to be done in person.
