SYDNEY (BNO NEWS) -- Police in a Sydney suburb have arrested and charged a man with murdering a family of five nearly two years ago, police said on Thursday.

New South Wales (NSW) police said the 47-year-old unidentified man was arrested on Thursday morning following an extensive investigation into the deaths of five family members at a North Epping home in July 2009.

The investigation was launched following the discovery of five bodies inside a home on Boundary Road in North Epping on the morning of July 18, 2009. The victims were identified as a 45-year-old man, his 43-year-old wife, their sons aged 12 and 9, and the woman's 39-year-old sister.

It was long a mystery who was behind one of NSW's largest ever single homicides, and police launched Strike Force Norburn which comprised detectives from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad and the Eastwood Local Area Command.

"This was a tragic incident and one of the largest single homicides in NSW history," said Detective Superintendent Peter Cotter, Homicide Squad Commander. "The investigators have never given up, and today is testimony to their dedication, and the culmination of 2 years of intense investigation."

The suspect, who was refused bail after his arrest, has been charged with five counts of murder.
