and, of course, it's utterly ridiculous.

Giving anyone at any time carte blanche to say whatever foggy notion enters their mind, with a quip... "read the newspapers" as justification.

The "foggy notion" you refer to - that the the present government's populist measures go far beyond what Thaksin's administration envisaged is hardly something I dreamed up.It has been a topic of discussion for months.

The reason why I said read the newspapers is simply because there has been so much extensive coverage recently.Sutichai Yoon's piece is typical:

Measures going far beyond is not the same as being much more costly. Anyway, Robert A. told me not to trust theNation

"The Nation’s intrepid editorialists have taken a novel line in their continuing, craven defense of the only regime under which it is possible for them to work at a national newspaper"

Thaksinomics is always about credit and how to borrow up big, expand businesses and to hell with the consequences in a country where bankruptcy laws are a joke by any western standards. This convicted criminal on the run is using populist policies to try to gain a few more votes but sorry, "... he obviously thinks they are all stupid to not see this scheme for what it is" Yes they ARE stupid, poor bastards - and they still believe idiots like the mouthpiece Jutaporn as Thaksins mouth in absentia. Votes no matter how gained, gets Thaksin closer to his seized billions and that is all he cares about, not Thailand or the people of Thailand. And they are unfortunately 'stupid' enough NOT to see his motivation. ohmy.gif

If Thais are so stupid why don't you go back to your own country where everyone is so wise?

Vote buying disguised as credit.

Things Taxin failed to mention:

1) high interest of course

2) late payment fees

3) higher cash advance fees

4) annual fee

5) direct bill pay from bank account, so there is no escape.

i feel everyone has their own choice to be in new debt or not to join the program. i feel they are grown ups and are responsible enough to join the credit program. it is an opportunity with certain credit line, not million s of baht per person.

True enough, it boils down to personal responsibility, however taxi drivers usually have auto debt anyway or pay high rent for their vehicles. I've been in Thailand since 2006 and it amazes me that the starting fare has remained 35b; whenever the subject of increasing it is broached, drivers usually say they'd prefer lower rental fees for taxis.

<link removed as a pollution reducing measure>

Rather a refreshingly honest statement by sideshow Bob. In other words: Under another regime (Thaksin), any national paper not toeing the line will be shut down, or sued into submission, making it impossible for anyone with a dissenting view to work at a national paper.

Everybody should avoid voting for this stupid Thaksin's party......and please speard this word around........as a middle-class Bangkokian.......and also having friends who I would term as coming from the less privileged classes, the Taxi Drvers and motor-taxi drivers are the worst Basta___! No govt has ever taken the stance of improving the taxi services....you have taxis that behave like mafias! Most of these taxis are also very rich.....trying flagging a taxi thats empty and most of the time they will decide not to take you if they are not in the mood or if the think that its too inconvenient for them. I would suggest everybody getting a car ...its easy these days esp for new ones as the payment terms are easy even for foreigners as long as you have a Thai guarantor ....and simply boycott these taxis and let them starve. Do not contribute to charity organiosations or foundations that support these trash or their families or offsprings....let them starve and die! I am sorry ...but I get very emotional after the issues that I have had with these local taxis.

Also , perharps , everyone should start boycotting paying taxes since the govts are also using it the wrong way.

Obviously not an environmentalist..........I guess gridlock and more polluted air is just the thing required for Bangkok........improved innercity rail network is probably a more balanced solution than "everybody getting a car"

I'd just like to know who the poor sucker is that is going to be providing the credit attached to these cards? Won't be seeing much of that back.

The whole scheme is just stupid. I don't understand why such idiocy is not openly mocked in the Thai press.

It'll be the tax payers.

It will effectively be a new tax.

Thaksin wants backing by the mafia taxi drivers that dont need any credit at all because most of them rinse tourists frequently.

Actually compared to most taxi at airports the Thai taxi is not too expensive.......motorcycle taxis are not too expensive either......buses are good 600 klms around 500 baht .but I guess if you are looking for handy available air conditioned comfort available at every street corner you are going to pay for it yes?

Old news that this is a vote catcher.......my comment referred to the idea that everybody gets a car, if you read it......I even offered a better solution, a way of improvement, an alternative suggestion......you did not notice?......it is very unusual here.......I really have no interest in Thaksin but I guess it keeps many here entertained continually criticising a soft target that does not respond......:) .

Thaksin Rak Taxi or Taxi Rak Thaksin?

I find Thaksin a perverse and curious character.

If I got away with murder and stole $2 billion in the process, I would retire gracefully and not invite the ire of those I have wronged.

When the coup happened we all "saw it coming" including Thaksin.

Had he any morality or genuine regard for the Thai people, he would have stayed and defended the democratic process.

Ironically, the means by which Thaksin now spreads his message would not have been tolerated under his tenure but is allowed by this administration.

For those with a sense of humour, have a look at the Robert Amsterdam website.

Dr Thaksin’s well paid advocate!.

Since when is it a right to own a home? If you want one, work for it. What we see is yet again the failure of government intervention and handouts.

The point being....... getting a foot on the ladder is important..........we are talking 'easy credit' are we not.........you assume people will waste the opportunity 'east credit' can provide........

I guess it suits your thinking......negative

I see that easy credit could provide opportunity........

My positive thinking.......just the way I am I guess......

Get a car and add to the Bangkok traffic?! Bangkok has once of the best mass transit systems in the world. Use that and boycott the immoral, corrupt taxi drivers, (not all are corrupt by the way!) and help the environment as well!
