Six killed in two separate bomb attacks in southern Thailand

PATTANI, THAILAND (BNO NEWS) -- Two separate bomb attacks killed six security officials and wounded 16 others in restive southern Thailand, MCOT Online reported Saturday.

The first bomb exploded near a local football pitch in Kapho district in the province of Pattani, killing three policemen and wounding 14 others. Five of them were seriously wounded.

According to the initial investigation, the bomb was hidden under a tree and detonated via mobile phone when 17 policemen were arriving to play a football match with villagers.

Meanwhile, in Raman district of Yala, suspected insurgents detonated a roadside bomb as a military patrol vehicle drove past, wounding five soldiers. Three of them died on the way to the hospital, while the other two were seriously wounded.

In the neighbouring province of Narathiwat, a former Rangae subdistrict official was shot dead while driving home. The official, who was also a police informant, was shot six times by four suspected insurgents on two motorcycles armed with AK-47 assault rifles.

According to police, the group of suspected insurgents was aiming to ambush local government officials.

Since 2004, around 4,000 people have been killed in Thailand's southern regions of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, as local insurgent groups renewed their fighting efforts against the government. More than 7,000 people have been injured in violent incidents launched by separatist militants.

A bomb attack at a football field in Pattani's Kapor district killed three police and injured 14 others yesterday afternoon, while a separate blast in Yala's Raman district killed three paramilitary soldiers and injured two others, police said.

A three-kilogram bomb was detonated by a cell-phone at 4pm near a football field in Tambon Plong Hoi in Pattani's Kapor district, instantly killing three policemen who were about to play in a friendly football match among Thai police and army personnel. 14 others were injured.

The deceased were Pol Sergeant Haris Wangravee, Pol Sergeant Narongrit Suwansri and Pol Sergeant Samart Tohsantha. This bomb, suspected to have been planted by insurgents, prompted police to set up more checkpoints to prevent more violence as Pattani town is currently hosting a Red Cross fair.

About half an hour earlier in neighbouring Yala, another roadside bomb went off and hit a passing caravan of an armoured pickup and two motorcycles, patrolling the local road between Ban Jampoon and Ban Joleemus in Tambon Tha Thong.

Three paramilitary soldiers on the truck - later identified as Second Lieutenant Ubon Noo-eard, Sergeant Major 1st Class Phol Wan-ong and Private Anuwat Phetchram - died on the way to hospital. Police collected bomb fragments at the scene. They suspected insurgents carried out the attack.

In Narathiwat, a former president of Tambon Ra Ngae Administrative Organisation, Adul-asi Seumae, 45, was fatally shot six times by four assailants on two motorbikes while driving his car on Phetchakasem Highway (Pattani-Narathiwat). Police blamed separatists.

Meanwhile, a volunteer ranger and two other men were arrested for firing guns at other vehicles on Talohalor-Yi-ngor Road in Yala's Betong district, police said yesterday.

Charoenchai Pornpisutnorakul filed a complaint at 6.30am yesterday that gunmen on an Isuzu pickup shot at his Toyota pickup, although he escaped without injury. Later, police manning a checkpoint in front of the Jakwa Police Station in Raman district arrested the suspects in an Isuzu and seized an M16 rifle, two pistols and ammunition.

The suspects were former volunteer ranger Muhammadsauti Beuraheng, 26, Nisannusi Samuyama, 30, and Panasak Khongsrirod, 26, the latter of whom was also wanted for attempted murder and illegal possession of gun in 2010.

Police were investigating if the weapons were used in any violent incidents. They also found that the pickup had a fake licence plate.

In related news, a royal-sponsored funeral was held yesterday afternoon for volunteer ranger Weerasak Hiranpratheep at the Nakhon Yala Municipality Crematorium. Weerasak was one of the two paramilitary soldiers killed while nine others were injured in the April 30 car bomb in Raman district.

I accept to a limited extent that Thaksins despotic paternalistic policies did not help matters, but I refuse to accept that this is the main cause of the violence. In case anyone has failed to look at the world as a whole it needs spelling out - Islam has bloody borders. This does not mean all Muslims are bad, but it does mean there is a widespread problem of fanatical Islamic supremacists wherever Muslim societies border non-Muslim societies.

In Asia we have the Thai-Malaysia border, Indonesia caused the East Timor genocide. Kashmiri sepratists murder Hindus in Northern India. In Africa there is murder and even genocide where Muslim and Christian populations mingle. Sudan was one, we just had the Ivory Coast violence and now secatarian killings in Nigeria after a Christian won the election. Europe we have Bosnia, Chechnia and I need not mention the trouble Israel has due to it's neighbours.

This is not just a Thai problem and hence I don't believe the problem can be addressed by any policy Thailand may adopt.

Its a difficult problem with no solution in sight. Thais desire for money may produce a solution to some of the problems. A large reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction etc may be one idea worth taking a look at. It seems the insurgents/seperatists are now targeting the police and military again. I suppose its logical with all the Teachers on holidays. They seem to be their easiest targets. Sadly this may change with School resuming shortly. I think I read on one of these posts that over 600 teachers have been killed over the past decade or so. Its a sad and sorry state of affairs. Bring on the big rewards for information leading to convictions for the past and present atrocities with a mandatory life imprisonment for those involved in and associated with this nightmare. Any other ideas to assist in eliminating or curbing the violence would be appreciated.

most of my indonesian friends are Islam.

Some are very religious and some are extremely outrageous. Both have been good friends to me.

The same for other religions. They accommodate both the God and Evil deeds.

we should look into the history. Thai Gov. indirectly killed them in Takbai during Thaksin's time as the PM.

they use a completely different language, unlike Khmer and Thai and 90% Islam .
