Hi, I am Sri Lankan. I do need yours help to find out that, next month i will visit Thailand under tourist visa. When i come to Thailand, is there a way to Apply Non Emigrant Visa when i already arrived here.

Non Emigrant ED visa or any other options to stay over few months? Because i will fallow a Teacher training course in Bangkok. But, they don't provide the Non Emigrant ED visa.

Thank You

Only with paperwork from the school would you get an ED-visa in a neighbouring country. If they don't want to help with it, you can forget about a non-immigrant visa and might be better of with another school or with a double entry tourist visa.

You'll be carefull with the type of visa. An emigrant is someone who leaves a country permanently, an immigrant is someone who enters a country permanently. You are looking for a non-immigrant (not non-emigrant) visa, as you are trying to enter the country, but not permanently.

For non-immigrant visa class ED (non-ED), you will need to have a letter from a school that is approved by the Ministry of Education to issue such letters for visa purposes. If they are not willing to issue a letter to you, you cannot apply for a non-ED visa.

If you seriously want to study in Thailand, I suggest you find a school that can issue the letter. If you just want to spend a good time in Thailand, I suggest you go for a tourist visa.

If you are atttending a teacher training course, then I think they would supply you with a Non Immigrant ED Visa, if they are a professional school. What kind of teacher training course is it?

The validity of a two entry tourist visa will either be 3 or 6 months from date of issue (as written on visa). Both entries must be made by that date.

In addition, there is no specific requirement for a student visa in Thailand. If you are entitlted to stay (have a visa or extension of stay) for any reason, you are allowed to study (this is different from some other countries).

Only if you don't have a staying permit for another reason will a student (non-ED) visa become relevant for the OP.

The non immigrant ED visa is extremely relevant for study if expecting to extend stay on that basis as that can be extended; not a tourist visa.

I'm saying that if he is not entitled to stay for any other reason, then he should apply for an ED visa. You are saying that if he isn't allowed to stay for any other reason, the ED visa is important... What's the difference?

My point was that unlike some other countries, in Thailand he is allowed to study on any visa.

I am saying he is not allowed to extend his stay for education on a tourist visa, as is the normal procedure for those on an ED visa entry, so if his study is more than a month or two of cake making he will likely want to obtain an ED visa entry to have the extension of stay option.

If the institution you want to attend doesn't want to issue you a letter certifying you are a student so you can obtain a ED visa (a visa for purpose of education)I would reccomend that you consider another institution. Oherwise, frankly, I wouldn't trust their honesty.

But if you still want to attend that institution it should be possible to get a Double-Entry Tourist Visa from the Thai consulate in Sri Lanka. I'm not familiar with the particular rules that apply to Sri lanka, but it should be possible. Be prepared to answer their questions and understand that they will ask you many questions until they are satisfied that yhou are serious about studying in Thailand.

If you can get a double-entry tourist visa, each visa wil aloow you 60 days with the possibilty of 30 day extension in country for each visa. So the total will be (60 days plus 30 day extension = 90 days) plus (60 days plus 30 day extension = 90 days) or 180 days for both entrys. You can get the extensions here in Thailand by going to the immigration here.

Be very careful that you exit Thailand and re-enter for the second entry BEFORE the date of expiration of the visa. That will be stamped on the visa when you get it. If you don't leave before that date (we refer to it as the "Must be used before" date...as in food where there is a "use before" date after which the food is considered "spoiled"). If you don't use the 2nd entry on that double-entry tourist visa before that "us before" date...you don't get the 2nd entry...and the whole visa is finished once you leave Thailand the first time.

The visa is not free...there is a fee for the visa, as well as each 30 day entension. I may be wrong but I believe the fee for each 30 day extension is 1900 Baht here in Thailand. I have no idea what they will charge you for the original double-entry visa in Sri lanka. You can get all that information from the Thai consulate in Sri lanka, I'm sure.

Good luck.

Some institutions simply do not give paperwork for an ED-visa. AUA is a very reputable institution for example that welcomes people to learn Thai but is not interested in students that study for an ED-visa. It has nothing to do with honesty.

I agree with AUA being a reputable institution. They also issued the letter for me some decades (not kidding) ago. They don't do that any more, and this has to do with customer service. I am sorry to hear that they went down this lane, but it is their decision.
