Patong Police Crack Down on Illegal Employment: Seven Arrested
Picture courtesy of Phuketinsta. On April 1st, Patong Police conducted an operation targeting illegal employment practices in the area, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals. The operation, led by Colonel Chalermchai Hearnsawat, focused on a construction site located at 162/37 Phra Metta Road, Patong. Authorities detained one Thai national on charges of illegally employing foreign workers, along with six Chinese nationals who were allegedly working without valid permits. The arrested individuals were taken into custody and transferred to Patong Police Station, where they will face further legal proceedings. Officials have not yet disclosed whether additional charges will be filed against those involved. This incident comes amid shifting trends in Phuket’s labour market. Previously Burmese workers have been seen securing official employment, while Chinese labourers are now increasingly being found working without proper documentation. The arrests raise questions about the patterns of illegal employment in the region. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on unauthorised employment and ensuring that both employers and workers comply with Thai labour regulations.
