Can anybody recommend a good hospital with a concern for haematology. My wife has been in and out of Overbrook over the last month with very low blood cell counts. It appears she is under a GP rather than a specialist blood Doctor. His prognosis is lack of cell production from the bone marrow, information that given to him by the biopsy lab, the solution to which, he says is continual regular transfusions.

I have asked about marrow stimulant medication which he says doesnt exist.

2 weeks ago she was pumped full of rbc and platelets. Rbcs should last 120 days but after 14 they were rock bottom again. I asked were they being attacked/destroyed by the immune system to which he shrugged his shoulders and asked me what football team I support!

He speaks very good English so I think he understands my questions but knows very few answers.

I would like to get her to a hospital that specialises in blood.

All recommendations are much appreciated.

You may need to go to SriPat in Chiangmai which is the private section of the CMU medical school. It has very qualified staff and all the diagnostic gear you may want.

I found out before the BEST and most QUALIFIED doctors are at the Bangkok hospitals (not located in the Chiangmai area or Chiangrai). Just do a google search for for locations. Found that out in March when I was there looking for specialists for RA treatment with Remicade.

My RN wife agrees.:jap:

Thanks Scorpio.

Does your Wife perhaps know a telephone number for enquiries/appointments or is it a walk in basis?

The clinic on the 13th floor of the sripat building has 3 clinics a day. about 9am-12, 1,30-5 and 6.30-8pm

If you go about half an hour before the clinic they will decide who is the best to see and you will get a number which they will indicate about what time to come and wait. It is possible to make appointments by phone but you still end up going through the same type of procedure.

By the sound of it tests will be needed so set aside some time. Specific doctors have specific times but there is always a good spread of doctors of varying specialties. Prices by western standards are reasonable but tests such as MRI can add up. Consultations are pretty cheap.

If you need a western doctor to communicate with in a western cultural way they do have an American whose specialty is Family Medicine Dr Greg who may help if cultural issues of discussing problems become an issue. Language itself is not an issue though as there as many doctors are foreign trained. (they are generally teaching proffesionals at the Med school)

Hope things work out ok.

Will ask when she returns :jap: It has been a long time since she worked there so she may not know for certain. Harry is probably correct.

Thanks again for the valuable information gents. The Doctor at OB has been around and said she can leave in the morning so we shall head across to CM as soon as possible.

Much appreciated info.

CM Ram also has a good hemotologist, if it is the same one when she worked there. He works at SiPat too. "Kitpipan" is the best guess as the spelling of his name. She just called a friend at CM Ram and says they have a full time Hemotologist named "Tratorn" she also says is good. 053 920 300 is CM Ram number.

Could be better service there as well, as SiPat is sometimes very busy. :jap:

As an alternative to taking the wife on such a long trip when sick, did you try Sriburin mate?

I walked in and out of Overbrook, but my daughter spent Christmas in Sriburin and I didn't have any real complaint. Like everything here though it depends who you deal with in the place.

Hpe she is soon feeling better.

Thanks Paul. I will nip in there tomorrow and ask on spec if they have somebody with expertise in that area.

Sorry havent been in touch about what we discussed. Will shout you when I get through this episode.

Sriburin does not have a Hemotologist. Wife was head nurse there and one of the head nurses was just here for lunch . CR Hospital has an hemo. Dr Nonrawan. Seems she is good. Might try to call and get appointment but it is busy busy place. She might be able to attend at Sirburin but not sure.:jap: They have VIP facilities.

I was going to suggest the VIP at Sriburin. Scorp beat me to it.

Not sure if you can go direct without attending GF reception but as you go through the main door go in a straight line and look to your right for the lifts

behind the dental clinic.

Go and ask them. What have you got to lose except a bit of personal time. Most of the specialists do the rounds of the district public hospitals

and if you can find a good Haemo it will save you a lot of to and fro from CM.

Good luck. Lets us know.

Not sure if he meant the VIP at the goverment hospital, which is much better than Sriburin, specialist on hand and at a fraction of the cost of Sriburin.

Bit confused as to whether your meaning there is a private/paying side to CR GOVT Hospital?

Anyway, have made enquiries and Maharaj/Sripat has a specialist there on wednesdays, Lanna hospital has one everyday 9~5 (for some reason I suspect this to be a GP rather than a specialist) and of the 3 contact numbers I have gained for RAM, none were answered.

We will head up midweek and see how we go.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions chaps.

Wife got a bad fever that came on quick last night. I rushed her to Sriburin and they have got her fever under control this morning. Just spoke with the Doc and he said she will receive platelets here and then he will xfer her to Dr. Narrawan at govt. Hospital. Lets hope this is light at the end of the tunnel. We seem to be moving in the right direction anyway.

Thank you all for your information and help especially Harry.
