Using Own Laptop In Thai Net Cafe`s.

Featured Replies

Having issues lately with many internet cafe`s. Normally I just plug a Ethernet cable into my laptop / note book what ever it is called and bingo, I am on the WOT ( web of Thailand ) and have a bit of access to the WWW !!!! Sarcasism intended !

So I am begging for tips how do I connect to the net in a internet cafe` that I need to manually input IP addresses into my comp?. Well I presume I do anyway. I am not IT gifted by the way. I have never had a issue in Bangkok, but I am sure it is not geographically related. Just a coincidents the cafe`s I used to use in Bangkok and the rest of the world worked with no issue.

I suspect that these net cafe's I have tried out in the provinces are just set up differently in their networks. I need help to use them, as they can't help their customers. Now, nothing against the staff, but they are only employed to collect money and play games it seems, not help customers use the net access for intellectual reasons with their own portable machine. Shit happens. I am over it rolleyes.gifjap.gif Games it is. laugh.gif

So how do I configure my machine to run in one of these places I ask, beg & grovel ?

They seem to be running XP, (I liked XP) I am running Win 7 Pro.

I am looking up their Internet Prototocol and IP settings and go ahead and copy them and type them into my notebook.

I look up my Win 7 Local Area Connection Properties > Network and select > Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

I choose TCIP/IP4 as the lay out looks the same with the same or similar options as I see on the internet cafe` settings.

The IPv6 Settings look somewhat different.

I copied the :

IP Address 192.ect.ect. .ect

Subnet mask 255.ect. ect. .ect

defult gateway 192.ect. ect.

Use the following DNS server address

prefer : xxx. etc .

These I took off a machine I rented in the cafe` .

I had a series of error messages,

" Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration NOT FIXED

DHCP is not enabled for "Local Area Connection" DECTECTED

and later after changing some settings,

Windows ha detected an IP address conflict

Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer.

Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue.

More details are available in the windows System event log.

OK, I admit, I feel like a real dick, I can't even use a net cafe` in a developing country. Honestly, any simple tips would be great thanks.

I did select in Win 7 the suggested "shared computers - internet cafe" option when it gave me the network option. Not a home network

Thanks you so much people here on Thai Visa IT section. rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif

How do you do a cheers with a beer glass here? jap.gif

Below was my original question opening para graph !!!! I thought I was getting off topic, so I restarted it, but it may help in a answer, I duuno !!!!!!!

If I wanted a fast (well faster than a carrier pigeon) net connection I some times go to a internet cafe`. When visiting Bangkok I now use a TRUE 3G sim and I also have a AIS 3G sim that I ay 880b a month for if I use it or not, for when in that coverage area (which is Tiny), but, often I am out of range of both and not at a ADSL connection, hence Hutch CDMA 3G EVDO is at best isolated in their 25 proviences and I am rarely in the CAT CDMA EVDO area. Basically, I rely on kids game zones, or Thai internet cafe`s allot. ....Fact of life.... How stupid was I 4 years ago believing that decent 3G coverage was 3 months away !!!!

You can go about it in two ways:

(1) Automatic configuration - where your computer is setup to obtain an IP address automatically from the net cafe DHCP server;

or

(2) manually assign a static IP address to your computer. If you choose this method, you'll need to know the Default Gateway or router IP as well as the Subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0).

For example:

If the default gateway is 192.168.0.1, you can manually assign your computer any IP address in the range of 192.168.0.2 ~ 192.168.0.254 as long as it's on the same subnet AND isn't already in use by another device on the LAN. Otherwise you'll see this:

Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer.

Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue.

Internet cafe's in Thailand do not let people "plug in" their own laptops normally. If you find one that will then its the same as every other computer in the cafe. When you log on they will give you a user name and password and you pay like everyone else. Like I say most likely a net cafe won't allow you to use your own laptop.

If they have wireless then you as them for the username and password and sit somewhere and pay for the usage.

Normally you would want to use DHCP to automatically get an IP address from their system.

Go to Network Sharing Center (Windows Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Sharing Center), then click "Change Adapter Settings" on the left.

You now should see a list of available adapters on your Laptop. Click on the one that is associated with your Laptops Wifi adapter. Click Properties. Select the line saying "Internet Protocol Version 4" (click on it once), then click the "properties" button.

Now tick both boxes - Obtain an IP address automatically - and - Obtain DNS server address automatically.

You may have to reboot your PC at this point. After that you ought to connect. If not you will need to get connection details from the staff.
