Internet Slower Than A Snail

Featured Replies

So, I want to speak to friends and family back in Europe. I can not log onto Windows chat.

Then I try to download, it says it will take 42 days.

Then I try to log onto Yahoo.com, it takes so long. I want to do business on the internet, can not.

I think to myself this is ridiculous. Why can it be?

Then, i think to myself, of course the elections are coming, so the 'best' way to help the Governement win, is to surpress communication.

I think same thing happened when they had the coup.

If this is true.....Where is freedom of speech? Why does this surpression feel so dated? When are these people in power going to grow up?

Supression of the internet is not a foot forward it is a 10 feet back.

Wow, that's a pretty big jump to come to that conclusion.

But maybe you are right, which blows my theory that it is my piece-of-crap Lenovo computer.

WOW paranoid conspiracey theories so early in a thread....I am impressed...

Or maybe back in reality land its your cr*p computer or cheap charlie connection your using...:whistling:

Would have to know where you are trying to get decent speed internet and how you are connected. Believe me, it's not just the election or trying to suppress information, it's the back-asswards approach to internet in this country. If you can connect by landline you usually have a pretty good chance of decent speed connection. Air cards are crap, usually, satellite is dependent on weather conditions, etc etc etc.

Take a look in the internet and computer forum on Thaivisa and you might get some good advice, but honestly it's simply the way they don't do things here in Thailand.

Good luck.

I dont have any of the problems described by the OP. I guess I'm just lucky.

Actually I have noticed that it has slowed down significantly since about a week or so ago, although I wouldn't have thought it had anything to do with the election.

I find when I visit Thailand I cannot access many sites.

Here in Laos there are no restrictions whatsoever :)

Which of the two governments is more repressive?

A snippet from The Vientiane Times

"Many foreign visitors and students here have been equally surprised to find they can enjoy unlimited access to all Internet websites, some of

which they cannot access in their own country. Laos has changed a lot in recent decades, especiallysince 1986 when the ruling media access freely available in Laos

Lao People’s Revolutionary Party introduced its renovation policy, which abolished the centrally planned economy and adopted a market oriented system."

Which of the two governments is more repressive? I hope that's a joke.

I think you might want to look for a more independent source of information than a newspaper that is published by the Laos Ministry of Information and Culture

A more independent source of information???? Like living here for the last 6 years????

Yes, it was a joke. I do apologise if I try to inject a bit of humour into my posts.

The fact still remains Laos has no restrictions on internet use, whereas Thailand has (in my experience)

The only site that plays up with ( no response ) is thavisa site.

Maybe it's the ALIENS fault.

Well you did quote a state-run newspaper to illustrate your point so I don't know what all the question marks are about??????????????????

The censorship here seems to depend on what ISP you are using but I guess it could be annoying. Slow services outside of Bangkok are more annoying though.

Above is my 4/.5 speed using speed test to Singapore on forum so do not see any problem on my TRUE circuit.

I think the OP really just has a bad DSL line/local internet problem. My TOT 6Mb plan here in western Bankgok still working fine.
