Violence breaks out in Ireland protests against visit of Queen Elizabeth

DUBLIN, IRELAND (BNO NEWS) -- Clashes between Irish police forces and protestors on Tuesday broke out during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Dublin, many people were arrested, the Irish Times reported.

The Irish Police (or Gardaí) informed that 21 people were arrested following the violent acts that erupted after demonstrators clashed with law agents in the junction of Dorset Street, Eccles Street and Hardwicke Street.

Protesters from the Republican Sinn Féin party and the 32 County Sovereignty Movement staged a demonstration at North Frederick Street, next to the Garden of Remembrance which was visited by the queen.

The 32 County Sovereignty Movement is the political wing of the Real Irish Republican Army (Real IRA), a paramilitary organization that seeks a united Ireland and responsible for many attacks including the Omagh bombing in 1998 that killed 29 people.

According to Gardaí, some individuals began burning rubbish and flags as well as taking bricks from a nearby building site and hurled them at security forces deployed to safeguard the area.

Earlier, Queen Elizabeth II took part in a wreath laying ceremony at the garden in downtown Dublin. The site, opened in 1996, honors all those who fought for Irish freedom from British rule.

The ceremony took place amidst the biggest security operation ever mounted in the city that included snipers strategically placed on rooftops and a helicopter overlooking the Garden of Remembrance.

The demonstration was part of an opposition movement aimed at separating Ireland from the United Kingdom supported mainly by Sin Féin. As Queen Elizabeth laid a wreath at the ceremony, Sinn Féin supporters released hundreds of black balloons into the air.

During the ceremony, Queen Elizabeth II was joined by Irish President Mary McAleese, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter and Army Chief of Staff Seán McCann. She also visited the Trinity College, founded in 1592 by Elizabeth I.

Not sure the whys of the timing. It is a huge amount of money to assign to one person. I cannot understand in such austere times or any time for that matter, how such importance can be placed on one person. Perhaps this is not the board to discuss that subject. However, it all seems a bit ridiculous and crazy in my view. The UK taxpayer, and the European taxpayer is on the hook for the champagne socialist politicians to bail out their friends at the banks. I mean what sort of system is it that the UK has to borrow money to lend to Portugal/Greece/ Ireland? Its not as if the UK has any money either, yet they are borrowing in the debt markets to bailout other countries that are going to default in the end anyway. Its time politicians grew a pair, and if not then the nation.

What does that really mean anymore, independence? The UK is not independent with or without the Irish there. Insurance premiums are going up in the UK for drivers due to Eu rulings. The UK cannot decide what light bulbs they want in their house, the Uk cannot decide what shape the fruit is it eats, or what fish it catches. The UK has to give prisoners a vote, including rapists and murderers, despite the Houses of Common voting 85% no...The UK taxpayer has to hand over the £7 billion to Ireland, £4 Billion to Greece, and ad Portugal to that list, and all the rest when it comes. Yet the UK does not even have the money, their deficit is bigger than Irelands, and the total debt in the UK is larger than Greece as a percent of GDP. Yet the UK borrows money to lend to Greece, Ireland, Portugal. I don't see too much Independence these days in the UK.

And never will be,it's clear to see that the majority of people in Northern Ireland and The Republic are at present happy with the current political situation,it's the small minded minority who continue to promote trouble that have the issue's,ask 5 million 15 to 30 year old British/English whichever you prefer to call them,what all the trouble's are about,they don't have a clue and don't care a toss about it,really really boring and outdated.

It's a good job the former British Empire and current reigning monarchy as a whole haven't been brought to justice for hundred's upon thousand's of terrible acts committed during the building of The British Empire,where could we possibly start ???

There are more Protestant unionists in northern Ireland than republicans so democratically it's unlikely to happen. That's why the terrorists use bombs instead of the ballot box!

Meanwhile, a majority of the Irish population has behaved in a gracious hospitable manner. It is unfortunate that a few malcontents tried to embarass Eire. These are the same malcontents that would be out causing trouble if the issue was an increase in the price of toilet tissue. HM's visit was intended to show that the peace process had moved to the point of no return. The visit is a gesture integral to the peace process and the cementing of relations beween Eire and the UK.. Such a gesture was a long time in the planning and would not have been undertaken unless officials in both countries saw merit in the visit. In a world that is undergoing idiotic sectarian violence, the ability of the two nations to behave in a civilized manner is a welcome event.

It's a complex and often ugly situation, but for historic reasons they are part of the UK and the people living there regularly vote for pro-Union parties.

Totally agree with everything you say. No doubt most of the "malcontents" were shipped in from N.I to cause trouble. In my experience the folk from ROI are generious and welcoming. Unfortunately it's the North where most of these idiots originate. Both sides of the religious divide i may add.

No but seriously , at least the visit went without noteable incident . What's a small demo, a bit of stone throwing and a bomb going to change . I hope the peace process in NI will continue to succed despite this . It is my belief these splinter groups do not have any substantial support from the public . Peace .
