Hi

I live in the UK and I’m a british passport holder. I’m planning a trip to Thailand, and neighbouring countries, later in the year, dates to be confirmed, but around the July/Aug period.

My intention is to base myself in Thailand for up to 3 months.

Then travel onwards to Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia in that order over a 8-12 week period.

I would then like to re-enter Thailand and stay for another period of approx 3 months, before flying back to the UK.

So with this itinerary in mind, I’m trying to fathom out the visa situation.

Do I get a 3 month Thai visa in the UK before flying into Thailand, and then just purchase a visa at each border? Then when I’m re-entering Thailand from Cambodia, just get another 3 month visa on the border as I cross back in? I’d prefer not to visit individual embassies if I can help it, even if it means hanging around at a border and paying extra – I’m trying to keep it simple.

Appreciate any feedback.

You cannot just get another 3 month visa at the border !

What you need is a double entry tourist visa available from Birningham Cardiff or Hull. This will give you 2 x 60 day entry into Thailand which can be extended by another 30 days on each entry if you wish at immigration for 1900 baht.

That then gives you a total of 90 days per entry, if you leave Thailand and re-enter you will then activate your aecond entry on your visa which will give you another 60 days which can also be extended again for 30 days giving you another 90 in total.

The visa's for entry into Laos can be purchased at the border as "visa on entry", I cant speak of Vietnam or Cambodia, I believe you need to apply for visa's before travelling, but others here will be more knowledgable about that.

It may require an overnight stay but he can get a visa if there is a Consulate in a border city as is the case in Vientiane and Savannakhet and in Cambodia he can stay in a hotel just across border and have passport taken to have visa issued.

As he plans travel and likely return to Thailand several times during the trip the two entry tourist visa may not be a good option.

LOP: He does state "My intention is to base myself in Thailand for up to 3 months" this would be his first entry, then he states " Then travel onwards to Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia in that order over a 8-12 week period." before returning to Thailand for his second entry.

as he finally states :I would then like to re-enter Thailand and stay for another period of approx 3 months, before flying back to the UK.

So he is stating he is travelling in a loop not bouncing back and forth.

Correct.

I have had a look at the Thai Consulate website in Birmingham with a view to getting a double entry tourist visa.

The visa application form states

"TOURIST VISA . THIS ALLOWS A STAY OF UP TO 60 DAYS FROM ARRIVAL IN THAILAND AN EXTENSION OF

UP TO 30 DAYS CAN BE OBTAINED ON APPLICATION TO THE IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES AND PAYMENT OF

THE CURRENT FEE. THE LENGTH OF EXTENSION IS AT DISCRETION OF THE AUTHORITIES AND THERE IS AN

INCREASING TENDENENCY FOR IT TO BE LIMITED TO 15 DAYS OR EVEN LESS"

In reality, are people finding the extensions are limited to 15 days or less?

Have not seen one such report in the years I have been reading this forum. And if it was happening it would be a major story. I suspect the Consulate has visa exempt land entry confused with tourist visa extensions.
