Hi,Need to fly to Chiang Mai at the end of the week but UK Pasport is in Hong Kong being renewed. Does anyone know what other ID UK Nationals can use to fly internally. Can we use Thai Work Permit (with photo), UK Driving license (With photo)??Many thanks in advance!

Hi

I flew to CM and didn't think about taking my passport; they accepted my Thai drivers licence as it has photo and passport number on it.

On that basis I'd assume (hope) your work permit with photo would be adequate. I was only asked at Phuket when flying out, for the return journey . . . nothing.

As far as I am aware passport renewals in HK do not require that you send your original document, a photo copy will suffice.

I have used my Dubai driving license and my Qatar driving license as well as a credit card that had my photo on it. Basicaly anything with a matching name (same name as the boarding crad) and reasonable likeness picture will suffice.

you do not send your original passport to HKG for renewal.

Both of those you have mentioned would be okay, have done on my driving license before now.

methinks it is illegal to send your passport abroad without your body!!!!

Saying that domestic airlines here ask foreigners to show passport but Thai drivers license is often accepted

They want to see a photo ID as mentioned above. 20 years and never shown a passport for domestic flights, just my Thai DL or university photo ID.

It is indeed illegal to send your passport out of Thailand. Tourist should keep their passport always with them. ( or in hotel etc etc and have a copy )

For domestic flying a photo ID ( DL or any other photo ID ) is enough to fly.

What ID would a Thai child need to show??

The child is 10 years old and has no photo id.

Was told the minimum age to apply for a Thai ID card is 15?

Many thanks in advance

The only way now to renew a UK passport is to have it sent to Hong Kong there is no other way

I travel domestically in Thailand all the time and normally use my Thai DL with no problem and in the OP case guess the WP would suffice, although I have never tried it.

I'm sorry but that's not quite correct, you do apply to Hong Kong for a new passport but, from Thailand, you don't send the old passport, just a copy of the page that contains your photo and details.

I stand corrected.

I was assuming, that when you renewed you had to send your full passport, I was misinformed.

I always use my Thai DL for domestic flights... I was trying to get on and earlier flight and waived my DL whilst in the crown. Got waived ahead right away and into a Bix seat, for which I had paid!

Have taken mine on birth certificate (Thai).

I travel within Thailand with just a Thai DL (the number on it is my passport number). However, I would carry a copy of your passport (and visa page if available) just in case, and second photo ID.

Be aware that foreigners are required to carry a passport at all times (but a certified copy is acceptable). In practicality, just a photocopy is fine. I actually did a color photo reduction and laminated it, and carry it in my wallet.

You might be contravening Thai law on keeping a valid id on you. But there are valid reasons for sending a passport abroad that the UK allows for. i.e. Not all countries have an embassy in the UK. I know oil workers who have had to send their passport to an embassy in Paris to get a work visa for Equatorial Guinea.

I'll go along with that. Coming here for over 20 years and the only time I have been asked for my passport was when I applied for a bank account. Used an ID card made in Kao San road for all internal flights.
