Politician shot dead in Angthong

By THE NATION

Wiroj Damsanit, a politician based in Angthong who was canvassing for veteran politician Somsak Prissanananthakul, was shot dead yesterday while driving home. His wife was also seriously wounded in the shootout.

Police said the motive behind the killing was politics - either at the local or national level. The politician was formerly chief of an administrative organisation in Pa Moke district. His wife Phonpen took two bullets from an AK-47 rifles in the waist and is being treated in hospital.

Somsak, who is adviser to the Chat Thai Pattana Party, said the death was a great loss to the party but added that the gunman was probably targeting Wiroj, and not his own sons Paradorn and Kornkawee, who are running in the upcoming election.

He also declined to speculate if the shooting had anything to do with national politics, saying the real motive would only be uncovered once the investigation was complete and police had identified the gunmen and the mastermind.

Somsak said political violence last broke out in Angthong in 1988 when candidates under his then party, Chat Thai, came under a bomb attack.

Chat Thai Pattana's chief adviser, Banharn Silapa-archa, called on all party members, MPs and candidates to be on the alert at all times after the shooting.

Meanwhile, police in Nakhon Ratchasima has called on former local politician Sawai Khanphakwaen, who allegedly shot dead his wife Wanida Setaputta and son Jessada, not to resist arrest otherwise "a loss can be expected". The politician is a sport shooter and gun collector.

Police said Sawai had gone into hiding in the lower Northeast and that his arrest was possible in the next few days.

"..............the real motive would only be uncovered once the investigation was complete and police had identified the gunmen and the mastermind."

So we'll never get to the bottom of it then.

The tried and trusted AK47 again. That's another one down. Still plenty more to come before the 3rd July.

Have the dear old BIB, published how many of the known assasins on their list they have pulled in so far? :o

There really should be a poster, ala those old Bugs Bunny cartoons, saying open season on politicians, with a foot note mentioning the 112 assasins along with their contact information.

I wish they had American politicians in their sights, and international bankers too, wait, lets not forget the lawyers. We all know how everybody loves lawyers. I see a movement here; become a politician, banker or lawyer, get a free bullet.... :D Being the peace loving person that I am, I would ever advocate violence.

Could the Yellow shirts be getting desparate?

I think you would put less of your foot in your mouth if you understood what parties stood for what stances and how the local power-struggle works.

This has nothing to do with the yellow shirts - nor red shirts.

"If you resist arrest, a loss can be expected". Who writes these things?

Dunno, but loosely translated I think it means, "Go on punk, make my day!

Or more simply 'Dead or alive'.

Maybe you are right. I thought the yellows were the rich Bangkok elite and everything outside of BKK were redshirts and the imaginary rich farang sided with thier yellow shirt peers so as not to seem poor.

Your are pretty wrong with your thoughts.

Just a coincidence that Ang Thong was featured in the documentary about the May 2010 demonstrations and the aftermath - recently aired again on ChannelNews Asia.

Apart from being wrong you are also off-topic since this case has nothing to do with yellow or red shirts.
