Jamaican air traffic controllers continue strike into second day

2011-05-24 06:22:33 GMT+7 (ICT)

KINGSTON, JAMAICA (BNO NEWS) -- Jamaica's air traffic controllers continued their strike onto Monday for the second day, causing several canceled and diverted flights in and out of the country, official said.

Despite Jamaica's Industrial Dispute Tribunal ordering the Jamaica Air Traffic Controllers Association (JATCA) to get back on duty, they did not report to their jobs, Jamaica's the Gleaner reported.

Air traffic controllers demanding retroactive pay raises and inclusion in the government talks regarding the outstanding seven percent wage increase due to public-sector workers, abandoned their control towers on Sunday afternoon after issuing their notice last Friday.

Staff at the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority assumed control of the towers, and as airports try to reorder flights, JATCA President Kurt Solomon said that he had only just been notified of the injunction through the media and had not been contacted by any government officials regarding the matter.
