What's up with all the Rain????

Rainy season doesn't start for Months.. and what will happen then?

Has there been any talk about this on the Thai media?

When I was younger I used to blame the Soviets for screwing with the Weather...

Now nothing left to blame besides "Global Warming" ????

It's POURING AGAIN now.

After being here 10+ years I would say there is nothing unusual about the current weather.

What was unusual was the lovely cool season we had; wish it was like that every year.

I think Thailand gets most of its rain from the South West Monsoon, which can start as early as May and ends in October. Sometimes rains come late in the monsoon (Sept, Oct)but certainly it can rain heavily early in the monsoon (in May or June).

Further south, near the Malaysian border, they are also influenced by the North East Monsoon, which can start around November.

I think I read that in Lonely Planet.

I just replied to another similar question.

Again I don't know exactly where you are in Thailand...and what the "rainy season" is depends a lot on where you are and how far "North" you are in Thailand.

So here is the general pattern. The "rainy season" in Thailand varys from South to North. Basically, and this is only a generalization, near the Malysian border you have a "rainy season" and a drier season. As you go north, say around Bangkok, you have two "rainy seasons"...one basically in April and May and the other in September and October. Further south, say around Phuket, the "rainy season" normally starts earlier and may even last longer...so it can effectively look like one "rainy season". In the north, say Chiang Mai the short "rainy season" may be be short enough so you don't notice it...and the long "rainy season" may start earlier or extend later...so you think there is one "rainy season" only. But really it's all one overall pattern of rains coming earlier the farther south you are...moving from the South to North...a lull in between...then another (usualy longer) "rainy season" after the lull.

Here in bangkok, that normally means a "short rainy season" in April and May, then a lull, and a "long rainy season" in September and October. Of course the exact dates and the amount of rain can vary a lot from year to year...but that is the general idea.

So far, here in Bangkok, this looks like a "normal" year for rain to me. Ihere should be less rain soon, June is often the start of the drier period. Then somewhere in late August the rain will be starting again, September and October will be rainy, and probably by November the (relatively) "cool" season will begin. Usually by November the "cool" weather will be starting...and basically last until February or March. Then the yearly cycle repeats...and so on.

So, actually, this rain isn't unusual now...at least here in Bangkok.

The travel agents often would not rather mention that part however, just show you picture of the sun and the beach(es) in Thailand.

Rainy season in Thailand as a whole is considered to be from April to October.

Yep, and May usually has more rains than June but it's been a dry May this season rather than a wet one.

My Thai colleague and my girlfriend both told me that the rainy season typically runs from July to the end of September. It certainly seemed that way when I was here last year. April seems a bit early? This is in Bangkok.
