Italy arrests most-wanted Camorra mafia boss

NAPLES, ITALY (BNO NEWS) -- Italian authorities on Wednesday arrested the Neapolitan Camorra mafia boos, one of the most-wanted men in the European country, the ANSA news agency reported.

Giuseppe Dell'Aquila, 49, was the acting chief of two crime families in Naples, the Contini and Mallardo clans. He was arrested in a villa in Naples-Giugliano Varcaturo at about 5:30 a.m. local time.

Authorities have sought the detention of Dell'Aquila for many offenses including robbery, murder, racketeering and illegal possession of firearms. The defendant has been at large since 2002.

Naples police conducted an operation that culminated months of investigation. Dell'Aquilla was also wanted in an order issued by Naples' General Prosecutor against him and 11 other members of the Mallardo clan in March 2010.

"The operation caused a further blow to the criminal group, depriving him of his current chief strategist and is part of a larger strategy aimed at disrupting the Camorra criminal organizations," investigators said.

Dell'Aquila, also known as "Peppe," is considered one of the founders of the "alliance of Secondigliano", which brought together Camorra families and dominated the organized crime scene in Naples during the 80s.

"This was the conclusion of a successful investigation of the highest level and above all another great victory of the state against organized crime," said Italy's Interior Minister Roberto Maroni.
