JULY GENERAL ELECTION

Abhisit gets mixed welcome in Bang Kapi

By The Nation

A man calls Abhisit "a killer"

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva received mixed reactions from voters on Monday, as he campaigned for his party candidate in the Bang Kapi area.

As in other areas, Abhisit was welcomed with hugs and smiles and presented with flowers as he campaigned for Nat Bantadthan, son of party adviser, Banyat.

He started the campaign at the Bang Kapi market, which was crowded with people shopping for food. He introduced Nat to the people and said that the party will continue its policy of helping the poor if it wins the election.

At about 7.30, he went to Sri Boonruang pier. However, while he was talking to people waiting to take the boat, a male resident from an apartment across the canal was heard shouting "killer" while a woman turned away from him, saying "I had better go, I don't want to see him."

Abhisit appeared to ignore the remarks and continued to distribute Nat's campaign pamphlets.

Meanwhile Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit said the party will from now on use video cameras to record all the campaign speeches of its candidates, particularly its top candidate Yingluck Shinawatra.

The move followed an incident where somebody tried to pelt Yingluck with eggs but missed during her campaign at Lumpini Park last week.

BANGKOK, 30 May 2011 (NNT) – Social Development and Human Security Minister Issara Somchai is travelling to Vietnam in order to discuss solutions to human trafficking with related agencies after a number of Vietnamese surrogate mothers were rounded up in Thailand.

Speaking at a press briefing prior to his departure on Monday, the minister announced that his ministry on 13 May 2011 repatriated 10 Vietnamese women involved in surrogacy service to Hanoi, and they were accompanied home by officials from the Department of Social Development and Welfare and the Foundation for the Protection of Women.

Mr Issara said the ministry today also repatriated ten other Vietnamese citizens back to Hanoi. One of them is pregnant while four have already given birth to their children. He said five children are included in the deportation.

The minister stated that he would also join the trip to Hanoi with other senior officials of the ministry to meet with Vietnamese Public Security Minister Lê Hồng Anh and related units in a bid to seek directions to address the human trafficking issue.

In addition, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and Suvarnabhumi International Airport are cooperating in setting up a one-stop-service centre at the airport to help both Thai and foreign victims of human trafficking. The centre is expected to be officially launched in June 2011, and it will work around the clock once in operation.
