CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Former Egyptian finance minister Youssef Boutros-Ghali on Saturday was sentenced to 30 years in prison in absentia after been convicted of squandering public funds.

Ahram Online reported that a Cairo court also ordered Ghali to return 30 million Egyptian pounds (5 million dollars) and pay the same amount in fines. It is widely believed that Ghali fled the country during the 25 January revolution that ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

Mubarak ruled Egypt in a 30-year-long regime which began in 1981. He stepped down this year after weeks of anti-government protests by crowds calling for greater democracy and respect of human rights.

An Egyptian court on Wednesday announced that Mubarak will stand trial for corruption and murder charges on August 3.

The Cairo Criminal Court also informed that Mubarak's sons, Alaa and Gamal, and businessman Hussein Salem will be tried along the former leader.

Activists have been demanding speedier trials for Mubarak and his aides. At least 840 people were killed and over 6,000 people were injured in the violent repression that took place during the uprising.
