UK launches new anti-terrorism strategy

2011-06-08 05:42:16 GMT+7 (ICT)

LONDON (BNO NEWS) -- United Kingdom Home Secretary Theresa May on Tuesday launched the government's new and radically different strategy to prevent people being drawn into terrorism.

"Our new Prevent strategy will challenge extremist ideology, help protect institutions from extremists, and tackle the radicalization of vulnerable people," said the Home Secretary.

The updated strategy will deal with all forms of terrorism including non-violent extremism which can create an atmosphere conducive to terrorism and can popularize views that terrorists can exploit.

"We will not fund or work with organizations that do not subscribe to the core values of our society," added Secretary May. "Above all, it will tackle the threat from home-grown terrorism."

Under the new plan, government funding will not reach organizations which views do not support mainstream British values, including universities and prisons, where there are risks of radicalization, said May.

"All new programs will be evaluated rigorously to ensure effectiveness. Prevent is an integral part of our counter-terrorism strategy and aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism."

The newly unveiled strategy will replace the existing policy, known as Prevent. Secretary May said that a review identified serious failings in the current plan, launched in 2007.

"This new Prevent strategy has my full support. It provides a template for challenging the extremist ideas and terrorist actions which seek to undermine the rule of law and fundamental British political values and institutions," said Lord Carlile, the independent reviewer of the Prevent review.

The budget for the new Prevent strategy in 2011-2012 will be £46 million (75.64 million), £36 million ($59.2 million) from the Home Office and £10 million ($16.44 million) from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

In May 23, the Home Secretary introduced the Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures Bill to be used to restrict the behavior of terror suspects who cannot be prosecuted or deported.

The legislation will replace the existing control order regime, making sure that restrictions which impact on a suspect being able to follow a normal daily life are kept to the minimum necessary to protect the public.

"The threat from terrorism remains serious and complex, and the first duty of this government is to protect national security and public safety," said May. "Our absolute priority is to prosecute and convict suspected terrorists in open court."

Very good news this and so overdue as New Labour's multiculturalism policies have been a disaster with clear and present threats not addressed due to misguided PC thinking.

The “flawed” efforts by the previous government to focus on international projects “diverted valuable resources” away from preventing home-grown terrorism, the new Prevent strategy will concede.

The strategy, being launched on Tuesday by Theresa May, the Home Secretary, will also say that such efforts also undermined attempts to “convince Muslim Communities” that “terrorism is unacceptable and wrong”.

Absolute nonsense, another waste of taxpayers money. Simplest solution, close all the mosques, ban the religion, and offer free, one way, plane tickets to the islamic country of their choice.
