High speed internet developed to give more access to Thais

BANGKOK, 8 June 2011 (NNT)-5 major state enterprises have inked an agreement on the fiber optic development with an aim of providing hi speed internet access to as many as 80% of Thai population.

Director-General of State Enterprise Policy Office Mr. Somchai Sajjapong said the Memorandum of Understanding had been signed by the following organizations: TOT Plc Ltd, CAT Telecom Plc Ltd, The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Provincial electricity Authority.

The MOU will allow them to share the fiber optic technology although more studies will be carried out to determine whether there are any limitations and to divide the service areas among the 5 entities. The hi speed broadband internet is said to reach more Thai families and also at a reasonable price.

Sounds great. Lets hope greedy and self interest do not take over like has happened with the 3G roll out in Thailand.

I expect the villages of Bangkok/surrounding provinces, Pattaya, Chaeng Mai will receive this capability first; now the real villages (i.e., small towns, rural areas, etc) will be the last to receive the capability. The ink on the agreement is probably disappearing ink so I expect this will be a l.....o.....n.....g term build-up with some of the companies signing the agreement being much faster or slower than the other companies. I'm not holding my breath on this one.
