ONDO, NIGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 21 people were killed in a road accident in Nigeria's western state of Ondo, the Nigerian Tribune reported on Thursday.

The accident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday after a truck driver was attempting to avoid a deep pothole which made him veered off the road and crashed head-on into a commercial bus. At least 21 people were killed, including two pregnant women and six children.

Ten people who sustained injury were taken to the hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries.

According to reports, the driver of the truck managed to flee the scene, while his conductor was arrested.

John Mexeux from Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Commision said that the commercial bus was overloaded. There were reportedly 30 passengers instead of 15 at the time of the accident.

Mexeux, however, blamed the accident on the drivers.
