TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) -- Jailed Iranian journalist Reza Hoda Saber on Sunday died of a heart attack while on a hunger strike, an opposition group said.

Saber, 54, began the hunger strike 10 days ago to protest the death of fellow dissident Haleh Sahabi during the funeral of her father. According to the opposition website Kaleme.com, Saber was transfered from Evin prison to the hospital on Friday due to heart failure, resulting from the hunger strike.

There were reports, however, saying that prison authorities failed to transfer him to the hospital in time.

Saber was jailed following the presidential elections in 2009. His funeral will be held on Monday.

The BBC reported that Haleh Sahabi, 55, died on 1 June during a confrontation with security forces at the funeral of her father, leading dissident Ezatollah Sahabi. According to reports, Sahabi, who had been allowed out of prison to attend the ceremony, was allegedly hit by security forces and died of a heart attack.

Iranian officials denied any clashes with security had taken place at his funeral.
