Flooding in northern Afghanistan kills at least 6

AIBAK, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least six people have died due to heavy rains and flooding in the northern region of Afghanistan, officials said Monday. Several others remain missing.

The death toll reached six people after four bodies - two women and two children - were found on Monday morning at around 10 a.m. local time in Dara Sauf Bala and Aibak, located in the country's northern province of Samangan, which was struck by flooding after the weekend's heavy rainfall.

Dara-i-Sauf Bala district chief told Pajhwok Afghan News that in addition to the four bodies, two people had been reported killed on Sunday, adding that another five remain unaccounted for.

The flooding has also damaged 25 houses and a mosque, as local residents reported that 35 animals had been lost as well. Furthermore, the harsh weather conditions have blocked several roads in the Hassani and Qalaq valleys, where emergency teams are still waiting for bulldozers and heavy machinery.

Samangan's Natural Disaster Management Authority chief Rajab Ali Yousafi said assessment teams have been deployed in the area to review the losses.
