PM Brands Amnesty Move for Thaksin National Threat

The acting prime minister considers the Pheu Thai Party's attempt to seek amnesty for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra a national security threat.

Before attending the 20th World Economic Forum on East Asia in Jakarta, Indonesia, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva expressed confidence that his Democrat Party will win the upcoming general election scheduled to take place on July 3.

He claimed that the party has been well received by voters, who want to see the country moving forward and stability.

Abhisit also admitted that even though the campaign season has not been without problem, it has been relatively peaceful.

The acting prime minister added that just only a few months ago, there were many skeptics who did not believe that the poll could actually take place but that is no longer the case now.

About his political rival Yingluck Shinawatra's attempt to secure an amnesty for her brother former prime Minister Thaskin Shinawatra, who has been charged with multiple counts of corruption, Abhisit said such a move is considered a national security threat and is not what the country needs at the moment.

He claimed that it could bring more problems and worsen the country's political situation.

I don't think he has done well but has tried to do well without succeeding.

The fact that he went along with the army organising his promotion to PM after they had repeatedly scuttled elected goverments does in my opinion make him a threat to democracy in Thailand. Ideally the army should have nothing to do with politics and being their puppet should have been beneath him. He would of course argue that he was only thinking what was best for the country at the time thus demonstrating what all politicians are arrogant enough to believe ie that they are the best choice and any means of gaining power is therefore justified.

I don't really agree with much of what the PTP stand for but feel it would be best for this country if they could put together a really strong coalition or gain an outright majority in the coming election. They would then have a clear mandate to face up to the armed forces which is a must if democracy is to grow and thrive here. If Abhisit wins then nothing changes and the inevitable confrontation is postponed.

Good come back - The real disappointment for the PTP and the UDD is going to be the fact that despite their howls of injustice they won't be able to touch Suthep or Abhisit should they form the next government. As they are MPs and will have immunity, just like Jatuporn et al. So will he be a fugitive. Highly unlikely!

Abhisit was the last elected PM. He was elected in December 2008. Before that, Somchai (2008), Samak (2007), Thaksin (2005), Thaksin (2001).

All elected in the same way ... in parliament by a majority of MPs.

All part of coalition governments (ie not winning "an election of the populace"), except Thaksin in 2005 after he bought a few smaller parties into the TRT fold (eg Newin's group and others that dumped PTP after PPP was disbanded).
