Was very surprised this year to be asked to show my work permit when entering Thailand at Phuket airport. I told official that my work permit was at my place of business (not in Phuket). He said I should have it and asked for my business address. I gave him a business card (without a physical address on it) and he said a friend(?) of his might come see me (I am a bit fuzzy about this last, wording might have been different, maybe that someone would see/check on me?). I wondered if the last part had something to do with getting customers for a side business but worried about the work permit part.

Is there any need or benefit to carrying one's work permit when away from home within or away from Thailand? Any knowledgeable advice appreciated.

Never heard of anyone needed to show his WP when entering the country.

The requirement is that you cna show the WP while you are working.

It is not a requirement to carry, it should actually be at your place of work.

I was under impression you should always carry - I know someone who was fined 4,000 as he was unable to show his wp jap.gif

Only at place of work do you must be able to show it.

I was just thinking what I would do in that situation. Probably the same as you, give him my business card for peace's sake. Would he not let me in without WP, this would go to his supervisor anyway. And that would be the end of the problem.

Immigration is concerned about the permission to stay, so they will look at your visa, extension of stay, re-entry permit. The immigration officer at the airport has exactly nothing to do with the WP. I hope this answers your question.

Thanks for all the replies. This fits my prior understanding, just wanted to check. He did ask, so another thing you might run into in the future.
