UPDATE 1 -- RusLine passenger plane crashes in northwest Russia, 40 killed

MOSCOW (BNO NEWS) -- A RusLine passenger plane carrying nearly 50 people crashed near a city in northwest Russia on late Monday evening, officials said, killing 40 people and injuring several others.

The accident happened just before midnight local time when the Tupolev Tu-134 plane was attempted to land at the airport serving Petrozavodsk, the capital city of the Republic of Karelia, which is one of Russia's federal subjects. It was carrying 43 passengers, including eight children, and five crew members.

According to the country's Ministry of Emergency Situations, eight people survived the accident while 40 others were found dead. Among the survivors is a young child who was transported to a children's hospital.
