Free Program For Recording The Happeneings On A Pc?

Can anyone recommend a free Windows program to record what's happening on a PC? It's nothing dodgy - it's for my own machine

PS when I say record I don't mean recording the screen but recording what's actually happening if you see what I mean.

I think that if you look for "keystroke recorders", you will find that many of them do a lot more than that - record every action like you want.
