Well we have a new government and lets hope this place gets back on track like last time Thaksin was in.

I'm expecting the baht to drop giving us expats more baht for our dollars, euros and pounds.bring back the 78 baht to the pound and watch the pensioners return.

I reckon given Samui's yellow status funding will drop and the place will stagnate.....apart from building a few more hotels of course.

I'm not so sure about that. Bangkok Airways fares were a lot cheaper five years ago (still a rip off ofcourse but not so obsene) the pound/euro were stronger and he did seem to understand the importance of tourism to employment of Thai nationals and the economy in the south.

This isn't to say i'm a fan but i do think these points relevent.

Except of course for the lack of support when Hat Yai flooded -- or when he said, those who voted for me are the ones who get helped first. Lets hope his sister doesn't have an equally bizarre view of leadership.

She's his proxy and will do exactly what she's told to do.

The baht will be stronger in the short term as the markets perceive it to be good news for the country. Let's see if the reds can do what they say. eeerrrrrrr

Indeed, a landslide victory with an overwhelming majority tells the FOREX markets that things are good and that the country is pretty much united. Explains why the THB strengthened overnight.

In the short term, well, lets say the next couple of months, I see no reason why the THB should weaken. Only when the real impact - and cost - of whatever policies the government put into place are known will the currency move accordingly. As for Samui, well, it is a law unto itself in pretty much every way, so a new National policy may well have limited impact here?

If you want a discussion on the Baht as it relates to Thailand there is a thread running here:

If you want to air your opinions on the government as it relates to Thailand there are about 5 or more threads running in news.

If you want to discuss how this current government will affect the islands and/or the South as a whole then lets try to discuss that here, in the Samui/Phangan/Tao forum.

New PM to Aide: "Refresh my memory, where is Samui again?"

Aide: Down south I believe. A tiny island full of rich tourists - usually.

PM: Does it cost us any money?

Aide: On the contrary, it actually earns a shed-load through taxes, and, well, you know, other sorts of taxes.

PM: Hmmmm. Could it earn us any more money?

Aide: Let me have a chat with some of my friends who run businesses there.

PM: OK. No rush.

:whistling:

before Taksin was putting in measures to weaken the THB one method was by only allowing 20 k USD transfered to Thailand at a time and the remander to be refunded in 1 year time.

i am sorry but during an election everybody votes for the person that benfits that person and that persons life style. Southern Thai's are deep down comuunitests. They think they don't really need us and are happy with what they have got. where as Taksin sees demand for forang investment. i don't mean about dave who comes over to open a bar. i mean big factories and proper multy million dollar investments.

these people would not invest there money in an unstable ecomomy polically or finacially.

Thailand is a country that is not in the UK common wealth and have been on its own from the start. So other countries have no power what so ever in this country and i think that the Thai people would like to keep it like that.

Anyway. who cares what i think i can only talk and type my words have no meaning as i am a nobody in this country. just like back home in ENgland. so i really don't care

Right on SBK. Seems a lot has been forgotten these last few years.

As an aside all the BKK Air haters will probably be cheered up as they can now look forward to a new airport, as the "family" are purported to have interests in the proposed new site(s.)

Well then, every cloud has a silver lining. Anything that bring that bandit airline into line must be a good thing right?

Why would you think i or anyone else has forgotten the Had Yai flooding? Personally i'm just trying to clasp onto anything positive in what is a totally dismal situation.

Posted

Dismal? I sure hope not. I am hoping that Thailand can move on and get things working again, that people can drop their agendas, their feelings of revenge and that the divisions in this country can begin to heal.

Not saying I am optimistic it will happen, just thats what I hope for.

I think thats what we all hope for. I for one will be far happier when our new government is clear as to their agenda for the future of Thaksin which at this stage is very concerning. On the basis f whitewashing the charges against him and bringing him back there is no chance of any healing or reconciliation.

I'm sure the army and a great many in Bangkok feel the same
