Thai Tiger Airways Put on Hold

The Transport Ministry has not approved the establishment of Thai Tiger Airways due to its unclear operating plan, though a plan for Thai Wings has been given the green light.

After repeated submission attempts by Thai Airways International to establish Thai Tiger Airways, Transport Ministry Permanent-Secretary Supoj Sublorm insists the ministry will not issue another airline license allowing Thai Airways to establish Thai Tiger Airways.

Supoj reasoned that two airline licenses have been issued for Thai Airways and Nok Air, and therefore, a third license will not be issued for Thai Airways.

Supoj added that Thai Tiger's airline routes are also similar to Thai Airway's and Nok Air's, making it unnecessary to have one more airline.

Regarding a newly launched airline called Thai Wings which is operated by Thai Airways, the Permanent-Secretary claims Thai Wings is not illegal as long as it maintains its status as one of the business units of Thai Airways.

However, he insists that Thai Wings must not have its own logo or company name during operations.

The establishment of Thai Tiger Airways has faced difficulties ever since the plan was launched.

The Transport Ministry has disagreed with the plan and is fearful that the airline could take some customers from Thai Airways and its Singaporean partner would share indirect profits from Thai Airways through Thai-Tiger Airways, as an indirect competitor.

Why have they persisted in the application, when they have already stated last month that they are short of cash.

They had to delay buying a new fleet of aircraft for their long haul replacement.

Greedy to get unfair competition, and stupid if you don't have the money to buy the aircraft to run a new airline.

What are Thai doing ???? get some money from who knows!! update with the delayed order, back into good profits and bingo. Get your fares down on International routes, more custom, more profits then expand where you can. I couldn't run an airline and that is obvious, but down to earth thinking sometimes helps. Think -Ryan Air-think Emirates-Etihad-EVA.

Just gotta love the government view of the commercial real-world !

Like that it's wrong for a joint-venture to pass some of the profits (if any are made) back to the foreign partner, or that the new airline might take some customers from Thai Airways ... so how about Thai Air Asia, then ?

TG management must hate having to compete, in a real-world where the Low-Cost-carriers are charging ahead, while 'the man from the Ministry' constantly delays decisions & blocks their efforts to run the business. :(

There is a far bigger story surrounding Tiger than you just see here.

TIGER Airways could be grounded for at least a month and be forced out of business in Australia altogether after the Civil Aviation Safety Authority revoked its permission to fly, saying the airline posed ''a serious and imminent risk to air safety''.The Advocate - 03 Jul 11:48AM

Thai setback for grounded Tiger

TIGER Airways, still smarting from the grounding of its fleet in Australia, has been dealt another blow after the Thai government blocked its plans for a budget airline in Thailand. A week after the Thai opposition party led by Yingluck Shinawatra was voted into power, Thailand's Transport Ministry has said it will not approve Tiger's plans to form a new airline with Thai Airways called Thai Tiger, because details of the operation were unclear.

The unprecedented ruling by CASA on Friday night, at the start of the busy school holiday period, has thrown into turmoil the travel plans of 35,000 people booked on Tiger flights this week.

It is the latest humiliation for the Singapore-owned low-cost carrier, which has a history of safety breaches, pilot fatigue, angry passengers, poor performance and large financial losses

There is another factor, all be it rather childish.

NokAir (which was initially a small step away from Thai) is fairly successful and has good numbers in terms of bums in seats. However Nok has it's

own oficial structure and it's strong enough to stand alone.

But, Thai have tried to interfere on numerous fronts, one item is that Thai tried to insist that Nok take large numbers of old Thai past use by date cabin crew.

The CEO of Nok refused and has continued to refuse to take them. His reason is that they will bring with them the lazy attitude and unproductive working behaviors of long-term Thai cabin crew.

He has inisted that he build a different working culture and behaviors and he has done just that, and pretty well.

Some on the board of Thai have pushed for another airline, the main purpose to compete with Nok in a childish pout.

Smart run airline Nok, These Thai cleaver dick people cannot even run their own airline properly, they say they are back in profit, but have yet to find the money for new aircraft. Hopefully they will not try to fob off Nok with their aged fleet, or discarded crew. Anyway why is Thai meddling in another??? better they run their airline for the passengers benefit NOT for management perks etc.

With the exception of Nok, and Air Asia, Thailand is woefully undersupplied when it comes to low cost airlines. Did we really expect the transportation ministry, in all of their vast wisdom, to allow another? Did we really expect progress, in Thailand? That would be an oxymoronic moment. The government is constantly doing things to shoot itself in the foot. Just look at:

1. Current visa policy, and how it is discouraging long term stays, and the farengs who spend real money.

2. The current state of 3G. There are many areas of rural Africa that have 3G! So far, there are two areas of the capital that have 3G, and alot of this is attributable to the mind boogling ineffectiveness, inefficiency, unwillingness to do what is right to move the country forward, on the part of the terribly inadequate officials in power.

3. Unwillingness on the part of the powers that be, to even attempt to engage in the fight against corruption.

4. Lack of wisdom inherent in the foreign policy that is being applied to Cambodia, and the ability to find a solution to the Prea Vihar Temple conflict. And I am not saying that they should just cave in. Hun Sen is a pig, we all know that. But, find a solution, to regain some international prestige, for God's sake.

Do I need to go on? You get the point. Backwards only barely begins to describe politics in this land. While many of us love it here, we can only hope that one day, at least one person with a small degree of wisdom will be appointed to any of these posts.

Ryan Air???? You've got to be joking, friend......

Maybe not, cos Thai Air Asia seems to be following closely in the jetstream of that mad Irish airline.

But at least Thai Air Asia, promising to take you to Chiang Mai, do not instead drop you off at Lamphang or some such isolated spot where you have to be bussed in to the city you thought you were going to....

Just as well...

Every blog/forum I've read discussing Tiger is full of scathing complaints and warnings to NEVER fly Tiger - oft cancelled/delayed flights, contempt towards customer requests for remedy, never refunding money even though their failures forced passengers to take alternate airlines, etc., etc.

The safety issues and grounding are no surprise to me based on what I've read.

Great diagnosis, good prescription but wrong patient! Remember, before anything else, everyone involved has to secure his/her share first... and that is most of the budget, the rest is superfluous! :whistling:

I mentioned airlines that tend to get the business and usually are profitable, Air Asia if you book well early on line and don't ask for extra's same Ryan, Nok is decent, if you want the troubled Tiger or the bad managed and expensive Thai. strapped for cash, with antique long haul craft--up to you. We all have choices, whether they are no frills, just convenient, habit, air miles, or the stupid who want girlie air cabin staff, to lust after regardless of airline. The best airlines are usually the ones that are reasonable cost, modern fleet, punctual, decent food, pleasant staff and that operate at reasonable times.

This has nothing to do with the election. Couldn't, now could it?

It's not like Tiger was going to compete with AirAsia, which is close to Thaksin ... :whistling:

To be honest this is the major change that this election brings - all the businesses close to the old elite will hurt, all those close to the new elite will mysteriously get things approved that were previously impossible... True 3G is next, count on it; the CAT deal will be declared illegal and everyone will start at square one.

nk that the thai transport ministry would have been looking closely at Tigers record in countries like Australia who have deemed them unsafe. I don't think it has anything to do with competition to Thai or Nok. The transport Ministry is think of the safety issues and I say well done common sense has raised it's head in LOS
