Us Demands Action On Syria Report

US demands action on Syria report

The UN should act swiftly on a "deeply disturbing" report implicating Syria in Lebanese ex-PM Rafik Hariri's murder, US President George W Bush has said.

A UN probe has found evidence pointing to Syrian and Lebanese links in his bomb death - claims which both deny.

The Security Council will discuss the report and could impose sanctions.

But the UN investigator who wrote the report has had to defend his decision to remove the names of five top Syrians from one section of the final draft.

The names included those of the brother and brother-in-law of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - Maher al-Assad and Asef Shawkat.

See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4365236.stm

Highlights of the Report:

1. The Abu Adass videotape claiming "credit" for the assassination was faked - probably in Syria.

Conclusion: There is no evidence that Mr. Abu Adass belonged to the group al nasra wal-jihad fee bilad Al-Sham as claimed in the Al-Jazeera videotape, nor even that such a group has ever existed or does exist now. There are no indications (other than the videotape) that he drove a truck containing the bomb that killed Hariri. The evidence does show that it is likely that Mr. Abu Adass left his home on 16 January 2005 and was taken, voluntarily or not, to Syria, where he has since disappeared.

2. The explosion was probably due to a truck and was not an underground explosion as previously speculated:

Conclusion: The explosion that killed Mr. Hariri and 22 others took place above ground. For this purpose, an amount of no less than 1000 kilgrams of military explosives was used.

3. Syrian and Lebanese governments were probably involved in the crime:

Conclusion: There is probable cause to believe that the decision to assassinate former Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, could not have been taken without the approval of top ranked Syrian security official and could not have been further organized without the collusion of their counterparts in the Lebanese security services.

This is what the US has been waiting for, a chance to put an even greater strangle hold on Syria. Don't get me wrong, those who committ crimes must be brought to justice. Including Israeli soldiers, who target individuals with helicopter gun ships and missiles. Can't ever see them coming before the Security Council, can you? The whole background of the Middles East, must be looked at against the context of US continual support to Israel and reducing any possible threat to it's middle eastern heagonamy, and secondly oil. Iran and Syria, are perceived as threats. Any excuse to replace there regimes, will be acceptable to the US and it's "allies!"

Interesting.

Do you have solution, also, to the dilemmas of the Middle East?

With which democratic countries in the area should the US work ?

You say Iran and Syria are "perceived" as threats. Do you have any evidence to prove this perception is incorrect?

As Israel has been constantly at war with most of its neighbors since 1947, I think it is erroneous to cite defensive military actions in the Syrian context.

Especially as Syria has been one of the major supporters of a refusal by Arab states to sign a peace agreement with Israel (and is possibly the most anti-Jewish nation in the world).

There is certainly now no easy solution, strictly speaking the state of Israel should not exist. However it is now a fact that will not go away. One thing that is certain, is that no matter what is done, there will always be those Arab states or individuals who will be hel_l bent on the destruction of that state. However, I believe that those States and individuals could be marginilised, if Israel where to return to the 67 borders. You may or may not be aware of the proposed peace plan of King Abdulah? "Return to the 67 boarders and we will normalise relations with the State of Israel."

There will never be peace with the likes of Syria as long as Israel is occupying the Goland Heights. Syria has no choice at present but to support the likes of Hezbollah, as longs as it's territory is occupied. It seems that the current US administration has given the green light to Sharon, last year Bush sent a letter to him telling him that, he might not necessarily have to return to the 67 boarders. With this unbiased support which is unlikely to cease anytime soon, for no American president can be elected, without the support of the Jewish lobby. Thus I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Bush is starting to get on my nerves, stop pussy footing around and take em out

The modern State of Israel began as a result of 2/3 majority vote on a resolution at the UN in 1947. A motion which also offered the Palestinians a state, which they rejected. Consequently, the Arab states surrounding Israel, attacked the fledgling State. Israel won its War of Independence. Since then the Israeli Defense Force has had two aims: the maintenance of a secure State and the recognition of its borders. Only two Arab countries have eventually cooperated in these aims: Egypt and Jordan. The rest have never even signed a peace agreement with Israel nor acknowledged its existence, despite fighting several wars and constantly supporting various terrorist actions against the only democratic state in the region.

....

I have.

Bush is starting to get on my nerves, stop pussy footing around and take em out

His PR is really down right now so you could say he's got nothing to lose by going in w/out UN sanctions or he'll balk with all that's on his plate.

Got to admire his stamina though! :o

I don't understand what you mean when you say that his PR is really down right now. Can you explain?

Please, gentlemen, keep these discussions to the reactions to the Syria report.

I am sure it cannot be that difficult to find other threads more suitable to jousting on the Presidents popularity?

Conclusion: There is probable cause to believe that the decision to assassinate former Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, could not have been taken without the approval of top ranked Syrian security official and could not have been further organized without the collusion of their counterparts in the Lebanese security services.

Conclusion: The Syrian and Lebanese "governments" are merely political faux cover for the anarchy that actually reigns within these countries. The countries are controlled by localized factions which control the munitions and military power. These factions do whatever they feel is necessary to serve their interests, which typically are geared primarily toward retention of power, financial gain through corruption, bribery and extortion, and do little to serve the interests of the general population.

The net result for the rest of the middle east region and the world is that these countries have been and will continue to be hotbeds for islamofacist fanatics, arms trafficking, and other activities detrimental to the common good.

The only reason that the US and other countries tolerate this behavior is because of the amount of legitimate international trade and commerce that takes place, which does benefit everyone.

How much longer this level of tolerance will stay in place is anyone's guess. I would say probably not too much longer. The US is likely already conducting covert military operations inside the Syrian border along Iraq. The heir to the Syrian throne is not half the hard-case that his old man was. His very life probably depends upon his ability to maintain the balance between the fanatics and the civilized world.

And consequently any movement towards democracy in the Arab world is an anathema to these "Mafiosi".

That is why they have always been at the forefront of all destabilising actions throughout the Middle East.

My personal opinion is that despite the economic advantages dealing with these people may have, they pose a far greater threat to stability in the area than Iran.

Therefore if the US and UK are to hope for a satisfactory withdrawal from Iraq, this cannot be achieved without a successful military action to establish control in Syria.

Well if that is what they are gunning for, which I don't doubt. Then someone in Tel Aviv, must be rubbing their hands with glee. Anglo Saxon/Jewish Axis of Terror, all over again. They know best of course!

Anglo Saxon/Jewish Axis - never heard of this. Could you please expand?

They forgot Iran :o

Anyway, the US military is so weak and so stretch now, that the US is no danger to the world

Clinton generals won Afghanistan

Bush is losing Iraq

Dollars in the toilet

Case closed !!

UN steps up pressure on Syrians

The UN Security Council has unanimously endorsed calls for Syria to co-operate fully with an inquiry into the death of former Lebanese PM Rafik Hariri.

However the resolution's sponsors - the US, France and the UK - dropped a specific threat of sanctions at the last minute in order to win support.

Instead, the resolution warns of "further action if necessary".

A UN inquiry into the killing of Hariri in February implicated Syrian and pro-Syria Lebanese officials.

This sounds like a Mossad setup. Unbelievable how the world leaders can be so easy to manipulate
