Hospital Cost's

well hi again to everybody

well a bit of a serious one people this time,me and the misses are due are first baby in january and i'am asking anyone who's experienced this before,what sort of cost's are we looking at i have had so many people say different thing's.

well we are staying in lamai and use the clinic in nathon the doctor there is a very helpful fella but like he say's it all depend's on the birth as to the cost.

so if any of you out there have experienced this i would appreciate your help.

Are you using the female ob/gyn in Nathon? She works out of Samui Hospital so the birth would most likely be at the govt hospital. Several friends of mine have had her as their doctor and felt quite confident at the birth with her there.

Congratulations!!

I'm expecting in February and also seeing Dr Pisanu in Nathon on the port road - I think that's who you're seeing. He told me that he works at the government hospital and if I wanted to have the baby there there would be no guarantee of having a private room - it's first come first served and they're usually all full. My Mum was in labour with me (in London) in a ward at night and she said that the hardest thing about the whole experience was trying to be quiet while everyone else slept. In the government hospital it's also a mixed ward so you could be next to someone who has been in a car accident or something like that. Saying that I really like the Dr. so I'm trying to work out if we should take the chance.

Friends that I know have paid around 15,000 baht at the government hospital. On the other hand Thai International in Chaweng charge 22,000 baht for a natural birth package which includes 3 nights/4 days stay in a nice big room where you can also sleep wt TV/Fridge/Balcony, nurse charges, food for the Mum and the delivery itself (not including spinal anesthesia). Their doctor is from Bangkok Samui Hospital or they have a Professor that can come down from Bangkok for water births and stuff. The elective cesearean was 34,000 everything included.

That's as far as we've got looking into things, if you hear of any other deals let us know!!

I didn't know there was a male ob/gyn. The one I mean is a woman (sorry, can't remember her name) and she is on the main road, just past the big Samui Mart on the opposite side of the street. I went to her for an annual exam and noticed alot of the local Koh P women were in there.

I think they mean natural as opposed to caesarian.

Yes, the natural part of it is vaginal birth, not induced, not given an epidural instead of cesarian birth. It really is at the discretion of the doctor what drugs/methods are or aren't used during the labour. You have to meet the doctor themselves and see what they are happy with. One doctor I talked to thought natural birth was just squatting during the labour instead of lying on a bed and another doctor I spoke to was pretty happy not to give any drugs to speed up the labour or deliver the placenta - unless there was a problem with the baby.

It's quite hard to be in control here as often doctors are often not challenged and rather trusted so when you come in with all sorts of demands they look a bit nonplussed.

It might be worth having a look at a birth plan and finding out what suits the mother and then discussing it with a doctor when you know exactly what you want.

well thankyou for your info,it is the same doctor dr pisanu he's a good fella and talks straight with you,as he told us it may not come naturally due to the baby being a little large so it could be a caserian,anyway thanks for your help and i will let you no how i get on and good luck to yourself.

At mission Hospital it was 39k (for 4 days private room) for a c-section for my wife and was very happy with the results. Wish she had gone the natual childbirth instead but LOVE our girl and she's healthy so it doesn't matter.

It's Seamsri, the ady doctor in nathon.

If you're insured you don't pay anything at all, I'd suggest going to BKK-Samui. Check your policy.

The birth itslef is not necesarily done by your doctor, only if you pay them another couple of K. Saemsri asked for 2K, which we gave to her.

If you don't do that, the normal nurses deliver.

Nathon hospital, they always give you that line of not having private rooms guaranteed. However,. sofar all the Thai women that I know of that delivered there and requested one got their privat room. They even use the rooms dedicated for the monks, as long as they don't need it.

For the OP, sorry don't know exactly the actual costs, but 15.000Baht sounds like a foreigner price, my wife delivered twice in Nathon hospital and we never paid double figures, including the room and had everything refunded by a Thai insurance company.

Yes, all the local women here go to the hospital outside Nathon to deliver (our hospital is extremely scary) and the ones I know had a private room.

I was just quoting what the Dr. Pisanu told me about the rooms Also the 15,000 was a figure from a couple of Thai friends, but maybe they had extras.

Maybe I will take the risk with the rooms if it is likely I will get one. I really like Dr. Pisanu, I have been treated by Seamsri in the past, but chose to go with him for prenatal care just from the great rapport we have. Seamsri is also very popular and has a great rep, I think some women feel self conscious with a male doctor.

Mikeybee - good luck with the op, I'm not sure prices for the cesarean at the government hospital, but if you ask Dr P I'm sure he'll have a ballpark figure.

In regards to BKK Samui - I was having prenatal care there up until a month ago (go for the best I thought - they'll be the most capable ). They charge in excess of 2000 baht for an ultrasound and 500 baht a time to see the doctor, I spent a total of 12,000 baht or so there in 4 months for various things. They also tested me for quite a few things that I wouldn't have been tested for in the UK.

I like the doctor there Dr Rapheepan, she's a young woman and I believe she is also the doctor for Thai Inter. Dr. Pisanu charges 500 baht or so for an ultrasound and doesn't suggest them unneccessarily. I have seen him twice and had two ultrasounds (at my request) and spent a total of 1,300 baht including some supplements and his time.

The problem with private insurance is that you usually have to be with the company for a certain amount of time, 1-2 yrs, before they cover you for maternity. They will also contest paying for treatments for any pre-existing conditions that might be aggravated by pregnancy such as a knee injury or something like that. My husband has insurance from the government and they pay a premium of 6000 on the birth plus a monthly sum wherever you choose to have the baby. I'm not sure what you get on the 30 baht scheme.

Bangkok Hospital Samui has 14 full time specialists in different fields.Some of them are the only of their kind on the island such as neurosurgeon, anesthesiologist ( although against the law some private hospitals use anesthetic nurses to put you to sleep or perform spinal block ) , ENT, psychiatrist, nephrologist (about kidney diseases ). None of them is allowed to practice in the other hospital except in rarely emergency situations asked by the other hospitals . All are available 24 hours ( the hospital has only 1 heart doctor consultant comes every Monday)but if you go between 20.00 and 8.00 you must be evaluated by a part time general practicioner first. There is no GP physician during a day time (before 20.00)

But some specialists from government hospital (such as Dr. Pisanu) sometime bring their patients in the hospital and use the hospital facilities.
